white smoke sometimes

sometimes it blows white smoke and sometimes it dont. needs new rings maybe? i need some ideas before i blow something up :argh: help please

Turbolvr 12-06-2010 10:34 AM

usually a sign of timing, so maybe a leaky line or injector?

captain_stabbin 12-06-2010 07:47 PM

how does the truck run overall?

12vpwr 12-11-2010 09:52 AM

the truck runs good. its still got a miss after the new injectors. im going to take the pump and get it rebuit here pretty soon. i want to go ahead and freshen up the motor though because its got 330,000 miles on it. it used to be an old hot shot truck and ive been hot roddin it since it was retired so it wouldnt hurt. theres no leaks in the fuel system.

Coolant level going down at all? White can be coolant burning as well. What conditions does it smoke white? Hot, cold, lots of boost, anything specific?

12vpwr 12-13-2010 03:10 PM

It smokes white most of the time its running. It ain't duppin smoke but its visible. And then occasionally it wont smoke white at all. And yes the coolant level drops after some time

94 12valve 12-14-2010 11:30 AM

who's injectors are you running? is it smoke or a haze?

12vpwr 12-15-2010 10:02 AM

its more of a haze but itll get heavy when i get on it. they're low budget diesel 5x10s. the 215 injectors

RAW 12-15-2010 10:10 AM

How fast does the coolant level drop? Any external leaks? It would be a good idea to do a coolant system pressure test. Hate to say it, but it could be a head gasket. Hope not though.

12vpwr 12-15-2010 11:23 AM

i sure hope not. i really dont want my daily driver being sat up for days

blazier18 12-15-2010 04:14 PM

take all day and night and if u get ur parts before u start pullin everything clean off or go ahead pull ur head and have it machined while u wait on ur gasket. if thats not the case it sounds like a leaky somethin pullin air in.

94 12valve 12-15-2010 09:15 PM

any coolent in the oil? or is there an external leak?

blazier18 12-15-2010 10:12 PM

and how much time does it take for coolant to drop and when u refill ur coolant any darkeness in color or oil color? i have oil all over the right side of my motor and fron diff comin from under my pump not to highjack thread

These guys are right.but just to let you no a rough estiment what its gonna cost , take your injectors out an do a compression test, that will tell you if you need new sleeves aan head work,or just head work.I hope the best, but if sleeves are good you said you would like to freshen the motor, haisley machine sales rod an main bearings that are the best ive used,do your bottom end and with those miles head needs work,go ahead if can an fire ring the head,an studs....just tryen to help......
Dont worry bout the miles,at 278000 miles an at 542 hp an short block stock only .0005 where on the sleeves at rebuild.

Turbolvr 12-16-2010 08:19 AM

Also have to check the head for cracks!

12vpwr 12-16-2010 08:32 AM
