engine

i've been looking for a new truck. i found a 97 ford one ton crew cab. truck has 200,xxx miles. it has a 96 cummins engine in it. the add says the engine is a "6BTA". it's mated to a ZF5 trans with a stock dodge clutch. it has 120,xxx miles. Is there any thing i should be aware of engine wise?

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

he is asking $15,000. i think it's to high. what do you guys think?

diesel pap 12-01-2010 09:54 PM

if the change was done right that should make a good rig.:tu:

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

sounds a little steep in price

fordornothing 12-01-2010 10:01 PM

ok. i'm going to go take a look at it on saturday. what about the price tag?

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

would 10k be a low ball on it?

fordornothing 12-03-2010 10:00 PM

ok so i looked at the truck today. the switch seems almost hoaky with all the wires just runnin everywhere. i don't know a whole lot about cummins so correct me if i'm wrong. but if the engine is a 96. shouldn't there be a computer? it looks like the identical engine my buddy has in his 1st gen.

No there are not computers on a 12 valve there all mechanical :rocking:

cummins power 97 12-04-2010 12:32 AM

how did it run

fordornothing 12-04-2010 01:18 AM

ok good to know. it seemed to run pretty good. started good. it just seemed like the converson was done in the least amount of time possible. the throttle cable was jerry rigged. it was very sensitive and about half pedal, it just deadend out. but he did say he was getting around 20 mpg with it. he said the timing was advanced to 18... and the lowest he's going with the price is $13,800 i think it's still to high...
thanks, Geoff

big willy 12-04-2010 01:03 PM

that's way too high my buddies 98 3500 24v dully in perfect condition is worth 13.. 10 is all that thing is worth at the most

fordornothing 12-04-2010 02:27 PM

that's what i thought. i blue booked the truck as it would be with the stroker.it came out to 8k. a 96 dodge came out to about 5k. but that was just the lowest model. and that was the price for the whole truck. if i get the truck. how hard would it be to convert it to a 24 valve engine?

cummins95 12-04-2010 03:00 PM

i dont know why youd wanna swap to a 24 valve... 12 valves are awesome and are capable of huge power numbers, just takes a little wrenchin.

fordornothing 12-04-2010 08:45 PM

true. i just don't know all that much about cummins. i know ford's 6.9 and 7.3 non turbo are mechanical and they are just total gutless pieces of crap. so are all the 12 valves basically the same?

prison 12-04-2010 10:37 PM

uh dont knock the 6.9. have you ever owned one? 12 valves make big power numbers. the 6.9 and 7.3 idi's are non turbo and high compression which is why they dont make big power but diesels are supposed to have high compression and the 12v is turbo

fordornothing 12-04-2010 11:11 PM

i've never owned one. i know people that HAVE, but got rid of it cos it sucked. but it's just personal preferance.

IMO thats too much money for a less than factory looking swap. Anyone can swap a cummins, but its gotta be perfect to be breaking even selling it. Ghetto shit means homeboy is regretting the swap and trying to make his money back. trust me.

You cant put a 12v in the same category as 6.9's and 7.3's! Thats against the rules!

fordornothing 12-05-2010 06:08 PM

he said he did the swap. and it looks anything but professional. there is a company called de- stroke. i've seen their work. it is very clean and it shows they take pride in what they do. like i said. it looked like it was done in the least amount of time possible.

blazier18 12-05-2010 06:11 PM

id tell him to kiss my arse id sell my truck alot cheaper then that and its only got 160k miles brand new rebuilt front end the rebuilt transmission and all that good stuff is in a box waiting to get picked to head to idaho though lol
