stack drone inside cab?
 

Ok I'm getting ready to make a decision on what type of exhaust I want. :yeah: Part of me wants to keep it sleeper-ish and just run a 5 inch out the back, but part of me has always wanted a stack, if I go that route I'm going to run either a 6" or 7" single, probably a CAT style, and will be cut off at or below the top of the cab.

This is primarily a run around town/play truck so in that situation, the noise won't bother me that bad. But every now and then I leave the car at stillwater and drive my truck the 200+ mile trip back home.

My questions are:
1) how bad is the drone in a 12v with stacks at highway speeds?
2) and how loud overall is it? I don't want to have to scream over the sound if I have a girl in the truck or somethin.

Also while I'm on the topic, the engine is pretty loud inside the cab (don't get me wrong I'm obsessed with the sound of a diesel engine just as much as any other guy on this forum, but it's too much and doesn't sound good to me. I prefer to hear the engine the most when I roll down the windows, not overwhelmingly from the firewall). I'm pretty sure this gasser ford didnt have much sound insulation from the factory. What can be done there?

25-35 sucks in 3rd gear 4th fine 45-65 fine in 4th sucks in 5th 68 on up is quiet, you can hear the motor again. I can put up with it though, drove 2 hours at 60 and it was ok since i had the windows down but the poor people in back were ready to crawl outa the truck :D Its doable for sure, but if it was my dd itd have a muff or be back out the back.

Thanks dude. My dilemma is I want it loud when I want it loud, but quiet when I want it quiet.

Maybe I could run the stack and rig up an electric cutout to a muffler, then run it back into the exhaust to where I could switch it back and forth :humm:

I think alot of it has to do with the size of the stack my 8 inch one was so loud I couldnt hear myself think cruising down the highway it gave me a headache with worst drone you could possible imagine, sounded great around town but my hell I had to where ear plugs pulling a trailer. needless to say it was only in there for a couple weeks and I took it out it just sits in my garage now...waste of 400 bucks:ouch: my truck is a regular cab though too probably wouldnt be bad if it was in an extended cab. But my old dual 5" stacks were great they sounded good and didnt drone wish I still had them:argh:

I'm straight piped to behind the wheels and any time I'm making 8-13 psi there is serious drone. Can barely talk to someone if the window is down. I wouldn't want to deal with stacks at all. Just my two cents.

i have a 7 inch mitre on my 95 12v auto, and its quiet untill you hit about 2grand then at about 2300 it quiets back down....i have 3.55s or 3.54s so it isnt as bad but once you hit two grand with the windows up it feels like the air in the cab is pushing against your ears.

but this is all in what you want, normal driving i can talk to my girlfriend fine aslong as its under 2grand, 2 grand you have to talk louder.

but this truck is quieter then the 97 i had with a 4 inch exhaust with a highflow muffler

alright thanks dude. right now I'm running right at 2000 or 2100 at highways speed with my 3.55's, but I'm going to eventually going to put something a little higher in to drop me down to mid to high 1000's. and maybe then I can topple 30mpg :yeah:

I wonder why you 97 with a muffler was louder than your 95? there is a bit of a stock power difference.... :humm:

yea i got a 5 inch single on my regular cab and i drove from houston to florida with the windows cracked the whole way doing 75 and it wasnt bad. but i do have an 8 inch sittin in the garage im dyin to put on. these florida boys dont know what loud is haha :scare2:

because on his 97' the pipe is smaller.

And if your driving over 200+ miles, i wouldnt put a stack on it. You may love it now but down the road, it gets kinda annoying.
