Truck wont start after swapping to 5speed.

Pretty much as the title says! I hooked everything up but there was a connector i had to cut off of the donor truck to hook on mine (the connector that goes on top of the trans. Thinking the connector is green). But im not a electrical wizard. So if i ask stuiped questions im sorry. I also noticed that the wait to start light didnt come on and the water in fuel light didnt come on either. I thinking all the other lights came on as usually. But ill keep ya'll upgraded on whats what. Thanks

Bryan

is ur check engine light comin on? i had the exact same problem after doin the exact same thing. mine turned out to be a bad connection to the pcm.
i have also blown the "enigne" fuse which wont let er start either

Dirt_Diver 10-09-2010 10:10 PM

No i cant get anything to get work. Here is what it is doing. turn the key to warm it up. and the only lights that work is the brake light, airgbag, oil, seat belt and im thinking thats it. I noticed that the wait to start light, gen light didnt work. But the airdog runs like a champ and when you go farther to start it. It seems like you dont have any batteries in there. But im gonna mess around some more and see what i can find out.

Thanks cummins95! ill give it a try and keep you in touch.

Update; i found out the problem with the wait to start light. The engine fuse was in the wrong place but it still wont start but i had the computer on it. and a P0123 code came up which was the TPS voltage and come to find out that the TPS was discounnected.

cummins95 10-09-2010 11:02 PM

u don't need a tps with the standard transmission so i doubt thats what it is

Dirt_Diver 10-09-2010 11:13 PM

I was messing around and found out that the cig. fuse was blown and i turned out my fan and it would only blow out of the defroster vents. and ive had that problem before and it was a vacuum line was disconnected but havent found anything yet.

What about the safety switch on the clutch?

Dirt_Diver 10-09-2010 11:15 PM

Where is that at? Is that the connector you gotta plug up from the slave cylinder? Or is it on the top of the trans. Because im useing a 96' 5speed and the transfer case and putting it on my 97'

jwirth 10-09-2010 11:30 PM

:pca1: What did you do with the Neutral safety switch it's not going to start if you didnt override it.

Dirt_Diver 10-10-2010 12:11 AM

How do you over ride it?

jwirth 10-10-2010 12:30 PM

Jumper wire. Do you have reverse lights?

cummins95 10-10-2010 12:45 PM

does it even roll over? if not u still gotta wire up the clutch safety switch.

Dirt_Diver 10-10-2010 04:08 PM

I found the problem, it was the Neutral safety switch. Thanks for all your help and your patience!! It was greatly appreciated:c:

Now i just gotta remember its not a automatic no more!! but other then that im tickled :jump:

is it worth it to do the 5 speed swap? i been thinking about it but cutting holes and installing a new pedal assembly doesnt excite me much :nope:

cummins95 10-10-2010 07:08 PM

to me it was absolutely worth it. no more slippin at all, gettin all the power to the ground. towing is 1000x better

Ol yea!! It feels like a whole new different truck!! Cuttin out the floor which wasnt too bad because i had a donor truck to kinda get a figure on the measurements. The biggest problem i had was trien to get the trans. in the clutches and the pilot bearing, just because i was doin it on the floor and i had a 4ton jump to work with:argh: And for the pedal assembly, it was a peice of cake! Had mine out and the new brake and clutch pedal in within 2hours or alittle longer then for the slave cylinder. just gotta take out the rubber peice out and slide it right in and lock it in place.

But if anyone wants to convert or even thinking about doin it. Totally do it!! Yea, its kinda gonna be alot of money but in the end its worth it. If you look at it this way. Automatic= gotta change the fluid every 25,000 miles then gotta buy a filter, adjust the bands, then if you wanna upgrade to bigger. You can spend 4,000 easy. Manuel= fluid change every 25,000 (i think) and buy a decend clutch. Treat it right, it'll last you forever. Then buy a donor truck and your in business.:rocking:

dshane62 10-10-2010 11:48 PM

there is 2 wires on the hyd clutch assy on inside of firewall where the cyl slips in at the wires are on that piece one goes gnd the other goes to ign hot source if you dont want
the clutch switch to work it will turn over anytime you hit the key, i did mine that way cuz i hate having to hold the pedal down to start it
think it was green \black colors on my 95

Dirt_Diver 10-11-2010 10:24 AM

One last question? what gear do ya'll usually start in? because 1st gear seems low and 2nd gear seems high

Farmboy 2.0 10-11-2010 10:40 AM

When i override the safety switch on the clutch i take it off the clutch pedal assembly and shove a 10mm bolt in it and tap the crap out of it so it stays depressed all the time

blazier18 10-12-2010 03:00 AM

ill be doin this soon i got all sorts of questions

i feel like a 5speed is way better especially for towing you can control your gears better especially when climbing hills or comin down them, tend to be better on mpg and alot more fun to drive

Why? The automatics come with a jumper that plugs into the connector that causes it to e grounded all the time. That would be much easier I would think.
