Tranny fluid and transfer case fluid question?
 

Im converting my truck to a 5speed. and i was just wondering on the fluids. Is there a difference between dexron 2 and dexron 3? And i went by advance to see if they had any manuel tranny fluid, and the computer said to use mobil 1 sys. 75w-90 is that safe to use? Thanks

I wouldnt use the Mobile 1.

The NV4500HD takes a GL-4 fluid. The NV4500HD has carbon fiber synchros and using the wrong fluid will eventually damage them and you will need to tear it down.

The 2 best fluids to use are Castrol Syntorque and Amsoil MTG. http://www.amsoil.com/storefront/mtg.aspx

The Amsoil is about 1/2 the cost or less.


As for your other question - check out Fritz's Dodge Ram Tech - theres all kinds of info there you should familiarize yourself with, including capacities and such.

For the T-case i just put Amsoil ATF in there, and the trans i put full synthetic vavoline 75w-90.

Why would you not put Amsoil in the transmission when you put it in the transfer case?

Its well known that the life of the 5 speed is very much dependent on it getting the proper oil as specified by New Venture.


The Amsoil is not on this list but thats because it came out after this list was issued. The Amsoil MTG does meet the proper spec for this transmission as shown in the amsoil link I posted above

I own a transmission shop, and both contain Dexron. There is hardly any difference between the two, other than the three has a higher boiling point than the two does. This means the 3 is a better grade of fluid due in part to it doesn't get hot, and foam as the two might.

What about +4?

The ATF +4 is what you are supposed to use in a Dodge automatic trans. As for the NV4500, I believe you need 75 w 90 GL5. I have not done mine yet because the trans is out of the truck still broken (hopefully getting to it soon). A friend of mine who has a 4500 was using Redline fluid but had problems. He ended up going to Chrysler and getting the fluid from them, and hasn't had issues since.

It needs a GL-4 fluid. Gl-5s have a higher sulfur content which starts to attack the synchros when the fluid gets hot.

Thank you. That is very good info for me because when I get mine done. I was always under the impression that it was supposed to be GL-5. I'm guessing synthetic will probably be the way to go correct?

If you put +3 in an Auto (vs. putting +4), is it 'hard' on it?
I know it has to do with the boiling point (mostly), so... is it a good idea?
