ztk7220 09-25-2010 08:40 PM

i painted my stock steel rims black is that what you are talking about

Heavy Smoker 09-26-2010 03:46 PM

yea

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

do you have pics?

Dr. Evil 09-26-2010 04:48 PM

Duplicolor makes a paint that specifically for wheels. Its supposed to hold up reasonable well.

Dupli-Color :: Wheel Coating

I would paint the steel wheels but not the aluminum ones.

jpfiero 09-26-2010 05:08 PM

Are you painting the factory chrome steel wheels? if yes will paint stick to the chrome?

Heavy Smoker 09-26-2010 08:10 PM

I was just curious on how the stock rims looked painted black.

jpfiero 09-26-2010 11:54 PM

which stock rims? chromed steel, painted steel, or aluminum?

Heavy Smoker 09-27-2010 07:56 AM

I have chromed steel rims, and i was wondering how they would look painted black.

jpfiero 09-27-2010 09:37 AM

I was thinking of doing the same thing (I've got chromed steel wheels to), I can't seem to find any pictures on google images. Have you painted chromed wheels before? I thought the paint would just peel right off the the chrome, but maybe there is a special primer that will work.

No one's done this before? Don't be shy, lets see some pics:rocking:

stxman 09-27-2010 08:01 PM

I'm thinking about doing this too....lets see some pics!!!Please:jump::jump:

Heavy Smoker 09-28-2010 08:41 AM

Well as long as you sand the wheel the paint should stick.Im not doing it until I see what it looks like cause it could look ugly with that design wheel.

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

well i found a guy who did it but I would paint the center caps black too.

Thanks for posting that I think it looks good, just to bad the stock wheels are so skinny. It would look good with black center caps as well:rocking: I wonder if it is possible to peel the chrome off of the center caps:humm:

Heavy Smoker 09-28-2010 06:57 PM

just sand it, it should come off beacuse its platic underneath.

Attachment 44970

excuse the crappy pic. its from my phone and its only pic i got right now lol. o yeh thats stock suspension right now too. i got 2" coil spacers and add a leafs too put on.

jpfiero 09-30-2010 10:10 PM

Looks good :tu:, What kind of paint did you use? Any problems with chipping or peeling? from the pic it looks like some paint is missing on the front wheel, but maybe those are wheel weights:humm:. How wide are those tires?

those are wheel weights. i havent gotten a chance to repaint the wheels since i got my tires put on. and the tires are 315/75/16 or otherwise known as 35's lol. As for the paint its just rattle can black a few coats and then rattle can clear a few coats. as for prep i just sanded and scuffed the wheels and also layed down little primer. they used to be the chrome steel wheels. let me know if you have anymore questions. id be happy to help

jpfiero 10-01-2010 09:28 AM

Wow I've got 285/75/16 and I thought that's as wide as I could go on the chrome steel wheels, do you have any problems with rubbing? That truck looks real good, I'm really considering do the same thing:rocking:

Dr. Evil 10-01-2010 09:37 AM

Some may have a hard time finding a tire shop that will mount a 315 on a 6.5" wide wheel. Not a good idea if you ask me.

Your black stockers do look pretty good.

But for a few bucks you could buy some Crager Soft 8's (in the proper width):

jpfiero 10-01-2010 02:07 PM

I actually thought 285's where to wide for a 6.5" wheel, I would like to get a set of those cragars to bad they don't come in 10" width. I might have found a set of aluminum wheels for cheep, I'll see what happens:tu:

Dr. Evil 10-01-2010 02:08 PM

285s are borderline. My Cooper ST's have been working and wearing great.

Looks like they are phasing out the 16" wheels - Im sure they had 10" one before. The soft 8's come in a 17"X9" which works for a 315

You could look at a different manufacturer - Im sure they are out there.

US Wheel perhaps?

Dr. Evil 10-01-2010 02:15 PM

Heres one:

jpfiero 10-01-2010 10:24 PM

I really like those soft 8's and a 17x9" would be great, but those bead lock wheels look real good too:rocking: I wonder what shipping would be on something like that:humm: I'll have to look into it.

Dr. Evil 10-01-2010 11:13 PM

Look at Summit Racing. Might be worth making a trip to the border to save some $$

Heavy Smoker 10-03-2010 09:09 PM

thanks for the pic, I may paint mine now.

96formulabird 10-06-2010 06:33 AM

the wheels are acctually 7" wide. i measured them. and they rub only on full lock. and i got a leveling kit to solve that problem. they work real well. no problems with 35's here. best mod visually so far!!!!!

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

alrite so the inside of the door does say there 6.5" rims, but when i mounted tires with my buddy we measured them and they came out as 7" wide. and 315's dont stick out any further then my 265's i had on before.... but i just recently repainted my wheels. so after i get my new headlights in this weekend, ill post up some updated pics either in here or ill start a new thread.
