head shaved 20 thou. 10 thou. gasket, will the valves hit?
I just picked up my head after having it resurfaced, the machinist told me it had been done before so now it has had 20 thousands removed from the factory head surface in total.
The problem is I've already bought a head gasket set from cummins with the 10 thousands head gasket. Should I be worried that the exhaust valve will hit the piston? Also is it normal for the piston to protrude from the top of the block about the thickness of the the old (compressed) head gasket when the engine is at top dead center? Thanks |
well you should really have a .20 over gasket cause it is a zero clearance motor

i like the .020 marine cummins brand gasket.:tu:

and second of all (not to pick on you tony) but there is NO sutch thing as a "marine" gasket if you walk into a marine cummins dealer and ask for a stock .10 over and .20 over head gaskets then go to a normal cummins dealer and ask for the same thing you will get the same gaskets! Cummins marine 5.9L takes a stock HG from the factory the same as every other 5.9L. Where "marine" gasket came from IDK but there all the same when I was first getting into this I walked into my local cummins dealer and asked for a cummins "marine" .20 over gasket and all 3 parts people looked at me like I was nuts they all informed me of what I have just said above I did not believe it there was a big deal about over on DTR a few years back after I posted this up and sure enough what those parts guys told me was true. Just a little cummins history lesson I guess. here to help the point http://www.puredieselpower.com/catal...ns-p-1055.html call Cummins and have them run that part number 3283339 They will tell you that is a "Automotive gasket" |
I was afraid you would say that, It means my truck and shop will be down for another 1-2 weeks:argh:
I've got a question for you BBD, I'm using a '93 block and head in my '96 ram and on the link you just posted, the gasket is listed as a '94-'98 head gasket, I was under the impression that all 12v blocks are the same, (at least as far as the head gasket surface is concerned) is that not true? Thanks ---AutoMerged DoublePost--- I managed to get one at my local cummins dealer it should be here tomorrow, I just hope all 12v head gaskets are the same:humm: |
Re: head shaved 20 thou. 10 thou. gasket, will the valves hit?

a normal cummins 5.9 gasket is not the same as a cummins marine gasket.

marine gaskets were used on marine engines. they have been crossed over for the truck engines. they have heavy fire rings and heavier price and come in different thickness. .020 is what we use. they have a different part number.
---AutoMerged DoublePost--- and we can only get one for the 12v. we cant get any for the 24v. just the normal cummins brand gasket. |
Re: head shaved 20 thou. 10 thou. gasket, will the valves hit?
What to you call a heavy price and what is this part number so i can check it out if what you say is true then all the people that walk into cummins and all the guys that buy them from the link above are just getting a normal. .20 gasket

i am sure some are getting the normal gasket. i tried to call you. i left a message. give me a call.:tu:

What was the outcome boys?? I would like to know because my truck supposedly has a marine gasket and i might be taking the head off. I'd like to put it back together the best way with the rite part.
|
.020 over marine gasket is a cross over gasket. many shops are doing this. that is what i sell to for the 12v. :tu:
|
I run my truck with a .010 gasket and my head is shaved .020! I also have a II cam and have had no problems it spools the turbo better, but if you are going this route you better be sure to check your clearence.

my 5.9 24 valve block has been resurfaced .009" to remove some scratches . will I need a .010" over gasket ? or can i use a std one?:humm:
---AutoMerged DoublePost--- my 5.9 24 valve block has been resurfaced .009" to remove some scratches . will I need a .010" over gasket ? or can i use a std one? 1 hr later. Machine shop just told me he would go oversized if .014" & over. |
it depends on a lot of things to say if you really need an over sized gasket. If you want to just throw it back together just get an over sized gasket
