Killer Dowel Pin?

Well here goes hope this is not a dumb? but when i p/u a 97 dually with a hurt motor when we pulled the motor & rebuilt it at my friends machine shop we put it back in got it running runs great until i juiced it up and got a leaky head gasket got the good cummins gasket and arp studs ready 2 go ,then i learned about the kdp issue asked my buddy about it he told me that when he tore down the motor there was no pin,(maybe that was the issue for the motor failure) so when he assembled he left it out my question is does that pin need to be put back in?:humm:and is there more of a purpose for it than just to line up frnt cover& housing? since i am doing the head i might as well get the pin back in any info would be helpful thx guys oh and girls aloha Hop Sing

i would deffinately put one back in, but thats just my opion. it might not hurt anything, but it was designed to have one, so i would.

if you have it off i would put it back in.... but from all the searches i have done and research.. i have never heard of a problem of it not being in there and breaking something... i think its only when it falls out... correct me if im wrong.
