should i do wheel bearings?
i just bought 4 brand new 33"s didnt put them on yet..wondering if i should do wheel bearings before mounting.my hubs have some slight play side to side and top to bottom, the balljoints are only a few months old they are fine. the drivers side has more play than the left, either is totally like wicked loose but i dont want to spank 2 $250 tires with bad bearings.. how much play is within reason?
:hellox: No play allowed IMO, a little play at the bearing is a lot at the outer circumference of a 33" tire. It would at least be worth a look to see how bad the bearings feel while spinning them by hand and checking for rough spots.Nothing worse than a burned up bearing welding itself to an axle.

I will tell you this if you dont change them you will regret it i know i did because when they go out they go out and its not fun. Just make sure when you change them to antiseize everthing really good because its always easyer to take them apart again.

I'm with the other guys who have already posted. There should be no noticable play in the unit bearings. I'd replace them, especially with larger diameter tires that add extra stress.
Nothing like loosing a unit bearing on the freeway... Watching your tire pass you up never makes for a good day of driving. :scare2: |
If you have off set rims or wheel spacers it will make them wear out faster.
do them immediately if its any question. when it comes to the safety of you and others its not something to overlook. not to mention it costs like 25% the cost to replace the wheel bearings as it would to replace the whole hub when one seizes and jacks everything up
Unit bearings are the cheesiest thing I've ever seen thats why I went with lockouts. 40$ to replace my bearings now.
yeah im going to do them, can i get them cheaper online? if so, where? idc about shipping delay dont need the truck on the road for another month..
O'Reilly's has them for either $230 or $330 depending on if your truck has 2 wheel ABS or 4 wheel ABS.
Napa on-line shows $244-$444 with 2 wheel/4 wheel ABS. NAPA Pro-link drops the cost by around 20% if you have access to that level pricing. Parts Geek (on-line) shows Timken bearings for $147. 1998 Dodge Ram 2500 Wheel Hub Assembly - Driveshaft & Axle - GMB, Timken, Front Right, Front Left - PartsGeek Discount Auto Body (on-line) shows them for $97! Discount Body Parts - 1997 dodge ram 2500 wheel hub assembly - 1997 Dodge Ram 2500 Wheel Hub As always, a link to someone on-line with a great price doesn't ALWAYS mean good things. Do your homework. I'm not making any recommendations about the online places. |
im liking that price from body parts online.... sounds to cheap? anyone else take a look at it? hell if their 90 bucks ill order a spare... that bearing in link will work with my 94 2500 4x4 12 valve?
i just replaced one of the wheel bearings on my 99. the one with abs unit was 330-500+. i went with a non abs unit from a local parts store, and only cost me 110 plus tax.
like said before, there should be no play at all. i just posted a DIY on here, might give ya some pointers |
is the abs unit important though? like is my abs light going to appear? im thinking of going with the body parts online bearings or the parts geek.... is their an actual left side and right side or they are universal? i rather spend the extra money than buy junk for $90 a pop and they be shot a few months down the road
yes there is a difference. idk what it is, just know they sale left and right. if u have 4 wheel ABS then yes, it will throw the abs light, and cause the front breaks to lock up when u slam on them
not really sure if it does have 4 wheel abs, its been pooring rain for 2 days dont really feel like walking in the mud across the yard to my truck, its not my daily driver. how else can i figure this out lol
Best is just to look. Man up and get muddy... :rocking:
It MAY be possible to pull the ABS sensor ring off your stock set and add it to one of the hubs without it, but I don't KNOW that this can be done. I'd sure be researching it if it were my money to spend though. That should be the only difference between a $100 and a $300 unit. Left and right are sold everywhere, so I'm presuming that it has to be that way. There is probably some casting difference that is a mirror image from side-to-side instead of being exactly the same on both sides. |
the ABS is all internal. u cant swap it from one to the other.
as for telling, one way to know for sure, is to look. if it has 4wheel abs, it will have a wire running from the engine compartment, following the brake line around, and going in behind the rotor |
dont be skeered and replace them no play is acceptable
alright so if their is no little wire running behind rotor i dont have 4 wheel abs, therefore i can buy the cheaper priced bearings.. correct
That is correct. :tu:
alright so i walked out to the truckkj it doesnt have 4 wheel abs..which will save me $$. any have an opinion of those $90 bearing/hubs from body parts online? im looking to oprder tonight just dont wanna order garbage. my local parts place wants $400 per side for anti abs why would those be $93? thanks guys
i guess there selling you the shaft there about to f*** u with.
i would call around. oreillys should be less than 120 if u have one close. here is a link to there site 1994 Dodge Ram 2500 Hub Assembly | O'Reilly Auto Parts good luck :tu: |
