tires not lasting????

how long are everybody's tires lasting?i bought a set of nitto grappler all terrains right at a year ago and they are already worn out.they might have 15-20,000 miles on them.all my roads around here are kinda rough and curvy as hell.is this normal or do i have problems somewhere?

hntruckman 03-17-2010 02:49 PM

TERRA GRAPPLERS DONT LAST AT ALL. MY UNCLE HAD SOME ON HIS TRUCK FOR 18K AND THEY WERE DONE.

BAD ASS RAM 03-17-2010 02:57 PM

i just bought a set of toyo open country m/t's what has anybody heard about them?

hntruckman 03-17-2010 03:05 PM

MY BUDDY HAD SOME OPEN COUNTRYS AND HE SAID THEY DIDNT LAST VERY GOOD EITHER. I THINK THE TIRES THAT LAST THE BEST ARE MASTERCRAFT C/T OR A/T

No, not normal. Problem? Maybe your environment, driving style, alignment, pressure, who knows?

YOU PULL A LOT OF HEAVY HEAVY LOADS?

BAD ASS RAM 03-17-2010 03:33 PM

no,i do drive fast and the roads are curvy though.

DIRTYMAX2004 03-17-2010 03:38 PM

Toyo MT's are supose to last for ever. I heard nothing but good about them.I just put a set on my truck. :tu:

12valvetater 03-17-2010 03:41 PM

I have these same tires with maybe 10k on them? There about half wore out in the back fronts maybe 3/4 tread. I never rotate them and sometimes pull a heavy trailer.

These tires suck in my opinion. They are way to soft for a heavy truck (6500 and up). The tread pattern is pretty good in the snow but horrible in any kind of wet offroad conditions. They do handle well on wet roads.

If I had a 1/2 ton truck or maybe an old school cummins they might work better as far as wearing.

A friend of mine had them on his 2500 chevy gasser and they wore fairly well, but then again that truck weighs much less than what we are dealing with.

A total waste of money in my situation as they did not perform to my standards with wearing and offroad capability.

My next set will either be a set of interco trxus or firestone mts. I'm leaning towards the trxus because they are fairly cheap, they have an E load rating, and they are about as good as it get on the pulling track. A downfall i have seen though with them is they don't like turns on wet roads and pack up with mud like right now.

WE MUST BE ROUGH ON TIRES IN KY LOL. I HAD A SET OF TERRA GRAPPLERS ON MY 1500 AND THEY LASTED ALRITE ON THERE BUT I PULLED A 10' TRAILER AND THAT WAS IT.

Good luck finding any tire that will last blazing around on rough roads.

BAD ASS RAM 03-17-2010 04:13 PM

i think we have established that there isn't some major problem with the way mine wore, seems like they did about like othere with the same set up,give or take.

Hey man, I got a pretty heavy foot myself. Get yourself some BFG Mud KM2s. Yes they're a bit more expensive, BUT, I rotated em MAYBE every 10K miles and ran around 60psi in em. Believe it or not, I got a little over 60,000 miles out of them. The only reason I got rid of them then was because I'd done some burnouts and had two tires that were much lower on the tread than the other two.

I've got 31,000 miles on my Pro-Comp Extreme All Terrains. Still have approx 35%-40% tread left. Think I'll make it way past their 40,000 mile tread-wear warranty. "Secret" to tire life is rotation. Mine get it every 3,000 miles.

I've never had a set of BFG's but I've always heard positive things about them, of course they are made by Michelin, the best tire out there. IMO :c:

diesel pap 09-16-2010 08:29 PM

wv roads are bad on tires. i got about 32k on my stock bfgs. that is alot better than other brands will do for me.

Dude_57 09-16-2010 09:22 PM

I work at a tire shop also and terra grapplers absolutely suck!!! But look good hahaha I have toyo open country at on mine and they have lasted for about 40 thousand miles and still look great! Michelin makes an excellent tire!! They have like 50 to 60 thousand mile tread life I'm putting a set on my truck when I'm done buying the rockstArs! And the toyo m/t do last quite a bit of time.

Bad news is, it's gonna get harder and harder to find 16.5 tires :c:

kazairl 09-16-2010 10:16 PM

Unless you like really big heavy military tires.

I've got a set of Mickey 315/70r17 MTZs that I have about 8k on. So far I have lost about 3/32 in tread. They rate the tread depth as 19/32 new. Though it's hard to be precise when they have air in them and weight on them.

Like it has been mentioned, Tire rotation and correct pressures play a HUGE part in tire life.

Sounds like you need a tread depth guage

kazairl 09-16-2010 11:26 PM

probably. I don't obsess much about the tread depth of my tires so I never bothered to buy one. I used a pair of calipers

Me either, if they look bald then it's burnout time :c:

kazairl 09-17-2010 09:14 AM

Speaking of which, There is a burn out contest tomorrow. I'm thinking I need to skip painting my house tonight and install my Rad. :rocking:
