Axle left me on the side of road

Guys, any diagrams or helpful info on why my drivers side rear dually axle on my 94 Dodge came out while driving tonight? Had to get a tow and am fearing the guts are toast. Is this ..common.. ?

big bad diesel 416 03-12-2010 12:51 AM

the whole axle shaft slid out?

Overload 03-12-2010 01:01 AM

Yes, its kinda unbelievable to me that it did, but I can see the axle shaft coming out the axle tube, I can see my brake drum pads, and it looks like both tires are outside my fender. What has happened here?

tltruckparts 03-12-2010 01:42 AM

it should be a full floating axle. it should be held on by 8 bolts and thats it. maybe all your bolts somehow backed out and it slid out. thats the only theory i can think of

or if you toasted some bearings and the backlash nuts backed all the way off and everything went haywire you could have the whole hub fall off. but all of the coming off including the retaining clips is like next to impossible

kayden101 03-12-2010 01:44 AM

wow. i never heard of that before.... that really sucks... that is :scare2: :scare2: :scare2:

So the axle slid out or the axle and the drum together.

axle

Yes, When the wrecker hoisted the back end up both drivers side tires were outside of fender, still bolted to the hub/drum assembly with the axle shaft connected. What keeps the hub from coming off? THe wrecker driver tried to tell me that the only thing keeping this from happening is a dowel retaining system inside the pumpkin, but that seems way to weak to be the only thing keeping my wheels from coming off. Just to start looking, anyone in Cincinnati area have dually rear end?

Pyro690 03-12-2010 10:13 AM

Bearing / nut failure? :humm: I would think the bearing let go. :pca1:

co84rc 03-12-2010 11:29 AM

nut backed off proabbly due to bearing failure.

FastCR 03-12-2010 11:58 AM

I just saw this happen to a 3/4 ton about a month ago. And yeah whatever retains the shaft in the pumpkin failed.

tltruckparts 03-12-2010 12:28 PM

iirc, nothing holds the shaft in on the pumpkin side. there should be two wheel bearings, either 1 or two retaining nuts, and two c clips that hold everything together in a hub assembly. for all that to go bad to the extent that it did is almost impossible, but apparently it happens

Overload 03-12-2010 05:08 PM

I'm tearing into it tonight to find the answer, but Im assuming the C clip talked about must somehow be the answer as the axle came out of the shaft. Having not had this apart before I cant visualize what it looks like on the hub assembly but there must be a "spindle" that the axle travels through and that is the nut that backed off? Still dont get it. WIll let you all know.

oldgrey90 03-12-2010 09:42 PM

hope your spindle is ok. if not some welding shops can replace it but its not cheap. the hub assy is held on by a single nut that has nylon on the outer 1/4 of the nut. then a wedged shaped think called a keeper is aligned with the key way on the spindle and pounded into the nylon to keep the nut from moving. i hope everything is ok and the nut just backed off.

co84rc 03-13-2010 12:38 AM

there are no C clips on a full floating rear axle.

i didnt mean c clip, i meant snap ring. my rear hubs use a snap ring on each side

yj junker 03-14-2010 07:34 AM

my guess would be bearing failure that caused the hub to come over the nut or the nut to back off,If you can get them I would look into stemco pro-torque nuts as repalcements for your axle,I have changed them on all my big trucks and the first time I pull the hubs off my truck I will be swapping them on,they use a snap ring inside the nut to lock it in place instead of the nylon and wedge:humm:

i have had this to happen many years ago. bearings is the only thing it can be. they are a little clip that sticks in the key way that keeps the nut from backing up. i would say that key came out and let the bearings get loose and they tore up and out comes the axle wheel and drum. this will make you think the next time you are running a 100 mph. :tu:
