Tappet Cover
My tappet cover is leaking...lucky me. I am going to be pulling the pump so I can get to the cover. So i don't blow it out again should put some breathers in the valve covers? Also I have a Fel-Pro gasket for the cover....should I order a Cummins one instead? What about those billet covers are they really needed?
If your worried your gonna blow it again I would buy the billet cover and be done with it. The cover bolts right into place and there is no gasket, you have to use a type of sealant. Mine came with 2 breather holes already drilled and tapped, I used both and made myself a set of twin 1/2" breathers.
I'm not going to build the truck to make much more than 500hp no more than 600hp if I make it that far. I am going to stay with a single turbo or a HX/HT3B compound set at the most. I have decided this is my DD and I am not going to sacrifice drive-ability for speed and power. BUT if the billet cover will solve this issue from EVER happening again I can get one made for a little over $100 locally.

Anyone else want to weigh in on the billet tappet cover or stock one?

I've done some reading and it seems the Fel-Pro gasket has a tendency to be a little bigger and not seal right. People think it's because the 24V gasket is a bit bigger and Fel-Pro uses the same P/N for both applications. I might just go with the billet cover and not mess with it again.....I'll have to see about the price difference though. I have a local guy that told me $400 installed for a billet cover and that's not bad at all plus he is going to set my timing to 16*.

just called and talked with Stumpman's friend and he said he'd make me a billet cover, install it and set my timing to 16* for $400 out the door.....I don't think i can pass that up. I'd have WAY more in it buying the timing tools, billet cover. Not even counting my time involved.

The wife agreed with me and said that was the best route in her opinion as well. Nice thing is I sold the head studs I had and that will cover almost all of this so it's little out of pocket for me and it will keep my driveway clean LOL.
He has two 3/4" NPT threaded holes and is going to hook them up to my down tube that runs to my 1 Qt breather tank. He said he might run one down to the tank and then run the other straight up to a valve cover style breather.....said he wouldn't know 100% until he got the truck and could lay it out. If he just goes to the tank I am going to add a couple breathers to the valve covers.
