tranny help!!!!

guys i need help.

so its been a few months now and my trans is still broke.
i have taken it to three different places and they are all stumped.
the last thing to do is to rebuild it.
i have had the trans rewired, solenoids tested and they passed, filter and fluid changed, and also had computers hooked up and everything is working properly but the truck will only do 73 mph to the floor at 2750 rpm

any idea?
please help me its costing me so much money and im only 16 and cant afford it much more

Coco2992 01-19-2010 07:11 PM

oh i know this feeling lol

lodal cummins 01-19-2010 08:14 PM

are you sure it has nothing to do with the fuel pump? like it is getting fuel but not enough of it. i mean if it checks out at three tranny shops and it shifts and makes it way to o/d,. then i would start looking else where. that is just my 2 cents before paying for a rebuild.

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

p.s. have the bands been adjusted on those tranny shop visits?

mylilpwny 01-19-2010 08:48 PM

+2 on checkin else were ... maybe gov springs ? or not enuf fuel like stated ... but if it checks out then i would say look else were

lodal cummins 01-19-2010 09:15 PM

my truck was running fine before i did my 3kgsk but the stock springs were at .026 so they did not have much tension on them. that could be his problem.

mylilpwny 01-19-2010 10:42 PM

thats wat im thinkin

4x4_guy 01-19-2010 11:07 PM

what gears you got in the rear end??? and also put a gsk on it to give it more fuel

BigDiesel359 01-20-2010 06:28 AM

If you did put in a GSK MAKE SURE TO TAKE OUT ALL THE SHIMS. Also, have any of them checked the torque converter?

rollincoal12valve 01-22-2010 06:50 AM

thanks for getting back to me guys

i have had the bands adjusted during those visits and they all said there wasnt a need to check the convertor because it was locking up and didnt seem to be slipping.

i think the truck is getting enough fuel it smokes like a train at low boost and once my hx35 clears it up there is still a good haze.

it has stock gov springs i really want to buy them but my dad thinks im gonna blow up my truck the way i drive it:rocking:

i hope this helps, i need to figure out this problem.

could having 218k miles have anything to do with it? like a slip in timing or like yall were sayin bout the stock springs not having tension, do they come loose?

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

also i forgot i have the 3.54s in it too i love em

even with my :edit: up trans or whatever i still walk my dads 24 valve:yeah:

(the one in the sig.)

monster12valve 01-22-2010 08:26 AM

swapped out the gsk. a 3k wont blow anything up.

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

this is gonna sound stupid but, make sure the gas pedal is moving full travel. when i bought my truck it would only do 2900rpm come to find out the throttle cable strected and i wasnt getting full fuel... i put a bigger spring in there till the new cable cam and she runs perfect now.

rollincoal12valve 01-22-2010 02:19 PM

alright i think im going to order a set soon.

i still think its the trans, because it worked when i bought it then a few months later it shuddered into od, then it started slipping, (it became low on fluid), filled it up and had no overdrive but the slipping stopped

this ring any bells to you guys???

rollincoal12valve 01-24-2010 04:21 PM

bump^^^

Do you not have OD now? If you ran it out of fluid then there is a good chance its toasted, however, the transmission will only affect vehicle speed if its slipping. Gears are gears, and if you are locked up in OD, the only thing that can affect speed is the engine. Now, 2750rpms sounds like a stock governor to me. You can go another click on the gov springs and see if that helps, but if you are no in OD, then yo are just plain outta gear there.

Edit -
I just ran the math.

33" tire with 3.54 gears and 1:1 transmission ratio (not OD) at 2750 RPMs = 76.3mph. You are not getting into OD.

12vcummins96 01-25-2010 10:05 AM

tranny is toast the overdrive section is the first to go it is the last thing to get oiled so if you ran it out of fluid than yeah its gone get it rebuilt

Shea@L&N Performance 01-25-2010 12:14 PM

It could also have some trash in the valvebody, which could also cause it to not go into overdrive. I experienced this with my truck. I thought it was the overdrive solenoid so I replaced it and then it still wouldnt go into overdrive.

rollincoal12valve 01-25-2010 03:15 PM

okay thanks guys i am going to make the decision that od is gone...

so i guess ill get it rebuilt soon.

what im thinking is that i fried overdrive and the solenoids are putting the trans into a gear that isnt there.

sound like a good assumption?

downeybm1 01-25-2010 07:36 PM

how do i go about tightenin the gov springs?

More or less. Basically either the solenoid is not engaging the OD piston with oil pressure, or the OD piston has overextended due to the clutches being burnt up and the seal is trashed, thus leaving you with 3rd as your top gear. The OD on these transmissions is VERY basic.

Well, you need to pull the shut down solenoid and then the plug in the side of the pump housing. Then you can tighten the springs 1 click at a time. Bar the motor over until each spring comes to a point where you can adjust it. There are 2. You may have to readjust your idle speed after tightening the springs.
