Air filter choices
I want to add a new performance air filter to my old 12 valve but am a little confused about all the numbers. Can anyone help me understand why they want so much $$$ for some of these "cold air kits"? What about using my standard air box with a K&N? It's MUCH cheaper...Why would I spend so much extra cash?

Well if you want to use the stock box i woul NOT put a K&N in there unless you want a new turbo shortly after. Amsoil makes probably the best drop in filter. The higher cost of most of those kits is because they come with piping, filter and a new box. Do a search for a BHAF and you'll get away with a lot cheaper "cold" air filter kit.

Don't use a K&N drop in! I did on 2 trucks and it would not seal, kept gettin dirt on the turbo blades. I don't know about you but I can't afford to burn down a $5000 engine from a $75 filter not working right.:td:

JMO don't use a BHAF, get a reusable AFE filter, it'll cost a litte more initially but once you clean it and re-use its paid for itself.
As for cold airs being so expensice, like duster said, it's mainly because it come with a new box, filter, tubes, and boots. |
OK, I guess I need to ask the question without sounding too dumb here...What the heck is a BHAF? What about S&B? I just don't know what they stand for? Where could I find a photo of each? Do they have a turbo tube or are they just filters for use in my stock air box?

Big Honkin Air Filter. Most come with a new box and turbo tube. I have used AFE for several years on 3 trucks with no problems.
|
Does the BIG HONKIN AIR FILTER just sit in place of the old air box? What about engine heat? How long would this type of filter last? Is it washable? Oiling type? What about cost and where would I buy one? Would it fit my stock turbo intake tube?

You can get just the AFE filter and stick it on the stock tube, same with the BHAF.

Should I use the stock tube or is there room for improvement?
---AutoMerged DoublePost--- The AFE link provided shows three different filters. Two have a cone in the end which I assume is a good thing for more air flow but the most expensive one has no cone; why? Is there an advantage of one vs. another? |
