signs of starter going bad

how do you know when the starter is goin bad what does it do?

coyropin 11-15-2009 11:18 PM

clicks, some times it does nothing

bowtech 11-15-2009 11:44 PM

i thought that it clicks when the battery connection is bad. How much is a starter and how hard is it to do?

Dr. Evil 11-15-2009 11:50 PM

You likely dont need a starter...

Go here:

LarryB's Dodge starting problems solved here.

Get the new contacts and plunger, Solenoid Saver Diode, and add-on Starter Relay kit. If your batteries are good - you wont have any starting problems for a very long time.

I just did contacts and plunger in mine. Not Larry B's but bought locally cause I was in a hurry to get this fixed before I was left stranded. I think it cost me like $24. Pretty cheap fix compared to a new starter.

coyropin 11-16-2009 05:40 AM

there easy to pull out disconnet your batterys, undo your cables to the starter then pull your three bolts off

monster12valve 11-16-2009 09:28 AM

mine started crankin really slow and the longer it cranked the faster it got.

94 12valve 11-16-2009 11:19 AM

after you turned the key and the truck started my starter used to stay engaged. I had to shut the truck off take the key out and wait for the starter to stop cranking.

Installed LarryB's kit and have never had another problem since.

bowtech 11-16-2009 04:03 PM

how hard to replace the brushes in it?

jaybuller 11-16-2009 04:09 PM

I just ordered the contacts and plunger my question is do i need to pull the starter to install them or is it easy enough to do it with the starter on the truck? thanks. mine wont click but somtimes it just does nothing when i turn the key to start it just goes dead no clicking or anything after i turn the key off then back on a few times it will start.

You best pull the starter.:tu: If you can do it with it on the truck your a better man than me. Seriously pull it and be done in a easy way. It doesn't take much to pull the starter. Need any help post back here and some one or I will jump in to help ya out:tu::c:

na i wont need any help pullin it i was just wanderin if it was easy to do it while on the truck. ive pulled my fair share of starters. never a dodge starter, but i know a 7.3 starter is a biatch because of the top bolt it takes some creative socket wobble and extention combos along with a lot of patience., hopefully the cummins starter is easy to get off.

FastCR 11-16-2009 09:54 PM

not sure how exactly it sits in the dodge, but on my setup a 10mm 12 point ratchet wrench does a good job.

Dr. Evil 11-16-2009 09:57 PM

Yes, you will need a 12 point socket or wrench. 6 points will not get it.

tower_ofpower 11-17-2009 07:15 PM

be prepared that the "top" starter bolt that hugs the block is the one that's going to be a :edit: its just how things usually turn out

jaybuller 11-21-2009 01:41 PM

got mine all done up, starts up faster now... and no more problems yet. it was easy to pull the starter just used a 12 point 10mm wrench and got it off. youll need a 10mm 12point for the starter to block bolts, a 15mm for the starter wire, 8mm for the small starter wire and the 3 bolts on the selenoid back and lastly a 17mm for the contact studs. thats it. so all the tools youll need are a 10mm, 8mm, 15mm and a 17mm and youve got it done in about 20 minutes!

Dr. Evil 11-21-2009 05:40 PM

Good info on the sizes.

Cummins_Power_13 11-11-2014 12:17 PM

So my truck had started fine one night, parked it, and not even two minutes later went to move the truck, and she didn't even try to start. Clicked like batteries were dead, but gauges showed battery was fine. Tried starting again and didn't even click when trying to start. Everything will turn on, just not start. Starter is out, or even connections for starter?
