Doing Killer Dowel Pin and Injector timing together?
 

As the proud new owner of a 96 12V, I wanted to immediately address the KDP repair. I most appreciate the articles in Diesel Bombers explaining the problem and providing the solution.

Trust me, the diesel tech, whom I earlier questioned regarding pre-purchase ckecklist items, never even mentioned the KDP. After reading about the problem on Bombers Diesel, [and after subsequently buying the truck], I called the tech back and asked him specifically, "Hey, you failed to tell me about the KDP?" His response was a lazy, "Oh yeah, I forgot about that" His response rather reminded me of an HMO Doctor! Welcome National Healthcare, folks!

Do I understand that when doing the KDP repair, it's also an opportune time to do the timing on my P7100 injector pump? I mean, if the truck otherwise starts and runs fine, should the injector timing still be done? Can it be done just as well outside of doing the KDP?

I had season ending rotator cuff surgery done [Men's "over-the-hill" hardball league] and I was going to take the truck into a shop to have the KDP work done. They wanted $380.00 for the KDP repair and an additional $320.00 for the timing. Save for buying the $150.00 kit that I learned is available on e-bay, the timing procedure looks rather tame in comparison to the KDP repair. Being a new diesel owner, however, I would have to ask your opinon?

since the front cover would be off for the KPD fix the timing gear is right there...........easy

First of all, excellent time to bump up the timing of the injector pump (it probably has slipped anyway). Your mechanic might not have even heard of the KDP.

Second, wow $150 for a KDP kit? Its just a tab, a gasket for the timing cover and a crank seal. Can be had for a whole lot cheaper, if you shop around or get it from Cummins.

The KDP is bout a 2 hour job (at least for a mechanic it should be). You decide if your mechanic is worth $190 an hour. Seems high.

Make sure he is going to remove and loctite all the other bolts under the timing cover - if he does not, one could drop and it would be the same as having the pin fall out. Also, make sure the crank seal goes on dry (no oil or residue). And another tip is to make sure the pump shaft is completely free of oil or grease (need to use contact or brake cleaner here) before torqing the nut down, and the nut needs to be torqued to 180 ft-lbs.

No sir, the $150.00 was for the timing kit, that I saw by way of a Diesel Bombers link, on e-bay. You're quite correct, the BD brand 'KDP' kit, including a new timing case gasket was about $100.00. The shop quote to adjust the injector timing was about $300.00. Admittedly, that seemed a wee bit high, considering the timing cover would already be off? Maybe some overlapping charges? I was curious though if the timing could only be adjusted with the timing cover off? Lastly, the shop quote to adjust the valves was $300.00 also. Even with a bum shoulder, I think I could handle that.

I do believe I read an earlier post from you that made mention that unless the tech really knew what he was doing, he could do more harm than good in attempting the timing job?

Needless to say, the shop that failed to make reference to the 'KDP' pre-purchase question, has not exactly endeared to me their trust! Might be a good idea to post for a good diesel shop in the greater Seattle area. Thanks again.

i got my kit at cummins for 68.00 for the kdp. that is a not a bad job to do. takes a little time. you will need special tools to the tune of about 180.00 to do the timing. you can do timing with the cover on. much easier with cover off though!!!!!!

Something else worth mentioning - if you can change your own oil - you can likely tackle the kdp yourself.

Which timing kit are you talking about?? Some are missing the $50 delivery valve socket - so you may as well bite the bullet and get the Snap-On kit. As a matter of fact theres a member here than can get some really good prices on the Snap-on kit.

i have the snap on kit and u will need the barring tool as well

You dont "need it"...but it makes it easier. You can also roll it backwards using the alternator nut.
