Block Heater

so i'm moving up north.... from Texas :U: to Illinois :humm:. My wifes granparents aren't doing to well, so we will be living with them for a little bit to help out. I'm kinda worried bout my truck and the cold starts up there. it's never had to deal with that in texas :rocking:... i looked and didn't see a plug for the heater. did they come stock on these trucks, or was it something optional? also, if it doesn't have one, could one be installed and about how hard would the installation be? thanks guys

i know that. i work on tractors and semis so its just a habbit calling them glow plugs

wildbill 10-27-2009 09:49 AM

You don't have to plug it in, but it's so much easier on the engine if you do, plus you don't have to wait as long for it to warm up.

If you look close on the passenger side just behind the oil filter - I bet the cord is hanging there someplace.

joshmock 10-27-2009 03:24 PM

thanks guys for all the replies. and thats exactly what i plan on doing, is trying to make it easier on the motor. if i forget to plug her in, i'll just wait for it to wram up. but it would be nice to remember and just jump in her and go :U:

-40!!! it thats friggin' cold up there?!!! i'm not gonna like that....

A friend of mine ran a wrecker service for a while and bought a plug in electric timer that he plugged into wall socket / then his extension cord to his truck. Set timer to come on at 2 AM and go off at 5 AM not so much for starting but for faster defrost heat. Just an idea.

12.valve.hauler 10-28-2009 01:13 PM

yea mine is by the head light. i jus leave mine in all night

firstdiesel 11-01-2009 01:29 AM

can i leave it pulged in all the time? Will it hurt anything? I dont drive mine every day mabey once or twice a week, or when it snows in the winter.

joshmock 11-01-2009 01:13 PM

i wouldn't think that it would hurt anything except your electric bill. if you only drive it every couple days, just plug it in the night before. or just start it up and let it warm up before you go anywhere and don't worry about plugging it in.

Hammer 11-01-2009 05:46 PM

When the temps drop below 32 here and I am at home, the truck gets plugged in and stays plugged in.I have not noticed a major difference in the electric bill as some state they have. The only place my trucks sits in temps below 32 unplugged is at work where we can not plug it in.There I just cycle the grids and twist it off and allow it a chance to warm up some before I move it.

12valvetater 11-01-2009 05:59 PM

my landlord got us a timer becuase last year there was three kids with diesels living there and the electric bill went through the roof espically since the one boy had a 7.3 and it wouldnt start below 40* :argh:

biged681985 11-01-2009 06:05 PM

mine gets plugged in under 32, but might have to around 40 now since the grid is deleted. :U:

is the covers that go over the grill for the winter are they a must? Should i invest in something?

biged681985 11-01-2009 07:53 PM

there not a must in ur area, just helps in keepin the engine warmer when real cold

firstdiesel 11-02-2009 01:04 AM

i guess for people more north i guess.

bluetj 11-02-2009 08:07 PM

I made a plexi cover for my cummins with a 6in hole in the center that fit in front of my radiator for last winter. Made a big diference in the heater function. Without it the heater wouldn't blow warm in my 15 mile drive to work. I had heat within a few miles with it in.

firstdiesel 11-03-2009 01:08 AM

did the motor run hotter?

bluetj 11-03-2009 09:58 AM

No more than what it runs in warm weather. If you make one make sure you put a hole in the center. I read things about them not having a hole in the center it puts a lot of stress on the cooling fan. And make sure you put it between the radiator and the intercooler. A friend of mine made one out of a heavy sheet of cardboard from an exhaust box and it held up all last winter.
