replaced fuel line...still starts, runs, dies

I replaced the feed line with rubber all the way to just before the tank...from the tank to there is only a year old..
The truck starts...runs a few minutes then acts like its starving for fuel and dies. i can pump the pedal fast and keep it running a little longer but still eventually dies.

Fuel pump and or fuel filter. :humm:

sounds like a fuel pump

Jerroh 10-22-2009 02:21 PM

lift pump?

I see your still having problems. I can belive noone has told you to put a fuel pressure gauge on it. try that see what you have. also take a clear hose put it on your return line. that way you can see if you have air in the system. If you do you will see bubbles. Then that means you have air getting in some where. It sounds like air but what do I know!

Actually, I did in another thread.

You can test the lift pump by adding a fuel presure guage. Get a 0-60 psi guage. Pull the injector pump inlet banjo bolt and drill and tap it 1/8" not. add some fittings and hose hose or 1/8" brakeline and youve got a fuel pressure guage.

Well sorry. I didnt see that. Well Iam glad someone did

Still lots of things it could be other than the lift pump.

Doesnt take much to check fuel pressure...in fact, its not a bad idea to have a fuel pressure guage on a 12V. Will post a pic of it tonight.

Thats true. Thats why I told him to put a clear line on the return to see if its got air in the system

thanks for the suggestions...i bled both lines on top the filter and still have air bubbles from both...so now its a matter of whether its the fuel pre-heater or the lift pump leaking. getting to the parts store is next to impossible. i am leaning towards the lift pump being bad/leaking since the truck would almost stall at lights sometimes...then all of a sudden decided to stop running...I think it was just a coincidence that i had just changed my filter....it died while idling and was running for about 20 minutes before it died. i really just dont want to replace everything only to learn it was something really easy....
if i had some clear line big enough i would run it between my fuel heater and lift pump to rule pre heater out. tomorrow i will pull the line off and see what comes out of the pre heater i guess.
