Steering issues

After taking the truck to a front end shop, I was told that my gearbox seems to be 'worn out'. I'm not exactly sure what needs to be done - replace the box, or something that I just saw on BD's website - the steering box stabilizer. Does anyone have one of these stabilizers from BD?

ok you can adjust your box there is a screw on top followed by a lock nut loosin the nut and turn the screw in but only 1/2 turns at a time until the steering feels tight the stabilizer is used to help with frame give

so you mean to tell me you can adjust those damn things:argh: my dad has replaced his three times because it was loose a bit. and the whole time he could of just adjusted it out. well one thing i have leardned from his mistake is that the pump you get from summit is junk. two weeks and the bottom fell out of it. so pass that deal up.

These boxes are officially adjustable but if you have to adjust it, it's time to start gatherin parts because the adjustment is only a short term fix. Most dealers won't even adjust them because of the risk involved. Just that little tweak to far and your steering box explodes like a grenade someplace down the road, not far enough and it doesn't fix anything.

Really though, take the time to read through the threads I linked to above. There is a lot of good info in those threads.

How much does a new box run anyway?

depends where ya get it; advance has them somewhere in the low 200's or so... but thats advance... as for the 1/2 turn this is absolutely correct, although i would recommend turning it in until you feel it to be "tight" then backing it out a full turn or so and then go by the 1/2 turn or 1/4 turn adjustments. if it's done right this'll get a good bit of life out of that steering box again... as uncle bubba has said it's more of a temp fix but idk about the steering box actually blowing apart from this... maybe from an EXTREME adjustment; other wise its got a tapered gear; adjusting the depth of the gear in the piston is what "tightens it up" so i dont see how it can blow one apart. not ruling it out tho; just about everything is possible. worst i've ever heard from this is the steering can be "dodgy" or erratic. usually a quick low speed test drive will let ya knwo right away
