Lift pump tick or not?

I have a tick that comes from my engine. It will come and go, its consistant with RPM But i hear it more @ idel. My truck has no oil leaks, and the Kdp has been adressed. I am almost positive that the noise is either comming from the p7100, or the the lift pump. Just thought i would ask if the lift pump tick common in the 12 valve could be intermitient. I tried putting a pice of wood up to it to listen but the trucks so loud it sounds basically the same everyplace.

biged681985 08-21-2009 10:05 PM

it is very possible the stock lift pump, at least from what all ive been told. good luck gettin it fixed

will1am 08-21-2009 10:42 PM

bio fuel may quiet it down enough to be able to locate the ticking.

captain_stabbin 08-21-2009 11:22 PM

yup, mine does it too, lift pump makes the sound , all it means is the cam lobe is worn nuthin to worry bout mine does it all the time then sumtimes it wont, kinda annoying i know but oh well no big deal

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

how many miles do you have on ur truck? mine has 300k

Biggy B 08-21-2009 11:28 PM

yep mines a tickn to but ive got 225k on her sometimes it is annoying but if it aint broke dont fix it!!:w2:

12valvetater 08-22-2009 12:25 AM

could be the valve need adjusted i know mine has always had a tick never could figure it out and now that i have an airdog i know for a fact its not coming from the lift pump

Biggy B 08-22-2009 12:38 AM

DO YOU LIKE THE AIR DOG? WHAT IS THE GPM

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

SORRY I DIDNT READ YOUR SIG
:argh:

cummins95 08-22-2009 08:17 AM

push in your primer bulb on the lift pump, if it quiets down or goes away, there's ur problem.

392hemix 08-23-2009 07:50 PM

Alright Good deal, next time i hear it tick, i will prime it and see if it goes away. i have just adjusted my valves about 10,000 miles ago

wisconsin redneck 08-23-2009 08:26 PM

yeh mine ticks too.. but i only got 180,000 on the truck.... mine only comes on when i turn the A/C on.. weird:humm:

94cummins12v 08-23-2009 08:31 PM

i know mine has been clicking for years with 265,000 miles i even replaced my can and fuel pump when i did the entire engine overhaul and the damn thing still makes the same click. turn up the idle and throw stacks on it and you wont here the click anymore:U:

spoolinaround 08-23-2009 10:21 PM

mine ticks and comes and goes depending on temperaure, more in winter then summer:humm:

94cummins12v 08-23-2009 11:50 PM

its a diesel let her knock and tick all she wants as long as its running good then i wouldnt worry about it, if it aint broke dont kix it

12valvetater 08-24-2009 12:11 AM

12 valves are a noisy engine and it seems they all have a little different sound to them

94cummins12v 08-24-2009 12:13 AM

you wont ever get 2 12v's to sound exactly identical, ive tried with mine and my budies truck with the same turbo, fuleing epgrades and exhaust, it aint happinen

Jeamech 02-11-2010 08:42 AM

THANK YOU !

I've been searching the forums about this clicking noise and this is the only one that has any info. Ripoff mechanic wanted to charge me $1200 blaming it on the DPD. It was too rythmic to me to be that. I was thinking valve or injector. Lifter pump cam makes more sense, and "aint broke dont fix" , sounds cheaper. Mine started at $140k miles.

Thanks again

Coaly 02-19-2010 01:16 AM

I would say 80-90% on my fuel system(94 5 speed) has been replaced or rebuilt at 100k miles because of this ticking and other issues, shes still a ticker at 122k, but not as noisy of a motor as my 01.5 6 speed.

powermad 02-19-2010 03:45 AM

mine had the tic when i fist baught it and the first time i took it to 3000 rpms it went away. but yea its the lift pump or valve adjustment.

not trying to thread jack but can any of you guys post me a link on how to adjust the valves? thanks

Coaly 02-19-2010 03:57 AM

its ten thousands and twenty thousands, intake and exhaust, you have to find top dead center then i dont remember?

powermad 02-19-2010 07:53 AM

so on the intake it should be ten thousandths, and on the exhaust twenty thousandths? is there any special method to it? thanks

12valvetater 02-19-2010 10:21 AM

You do half roll the engine 180* and then do the over half.

what? im sorry but what half are you talking about?

97cummins 02-21-2010 02:14 AM

It does sound like your lift pump.Mine did the same thing a couple years ago, replaced the lift pump and no more ticking.just remember that the lift pump helps supply fuel to the pump. And when the lift pump stops working it starves the pump of fuel.

FIX the TIX TIX TIX TIX TIX ?

I took care of my KDP this weekend, it was snug as a bug, but at least the shiney custom made washer will give me some peace of mind. And I had a crankshaft pulley leak anyway, it would have saved me some time to know to shove that plastic collar all the way to the wide part inside the seal to get it over the crankshaft. Stupid Felpro didn't give dummies like me instructions. I popped the seal out of the cover 3 times trying to get it on. It was like trying to use a thimble as a condom and just as painful.

Anyway, is there a cheap way to fix this ticking noise? Did my #10 fuel plate cause it or any other damage?

Nope,i don't think there's a cheap way of fixing the ticking noise. And nope your #10 fuel plate didn't cause it.I have a #10 plate to.

powermad 03-01-2010 01:45 PM

contact cummins_guy he can fix your tick for 35 bucks just send him a email.:tu:

blkjack 03-01-2010 01:55 PM

Dont quote me on this and I am not even sure if it is right or not but I have heard that some of the ticking in the cummins can come fromthe gears on the front of the engine the cam, injection pump ect being that they are straight cut gears... Has anyone heard of this or know if they can cause the noise?

zjohnsonua 03-01-2010 04:05 PM

Its the LP, not the gears. The rod on the LP wears and gives that steady tick. As to the gears, if they're ticking then I would think there's another set of issues.

Jeamech 03-10-2010 10:39 PM

I got too ticked at the......tick, tick,tick,tick

$140 later my tick is gone. Who ever suggested pushing the primer pump to see if the Lower Pump was causing the ticking was right. It stops ticking with a push while running. I replaced my LP in about 2 hrs. But I had removable wheel wells which gives me easy access to the sides of my cummins. I feel bad for the guy who has a real ram and not a whacked out mod like mine. Thank god the engineers made the pushrod on the LP softer than the cam lobe. ( I hope). Im not sure the contact between the pushrod and cam was the problem, didnt look worn, cupped, or mushroomed. When I push in the pushrod on the LP and let it spring back it makes a familiar click and gives me flashbacks. hmmmmmmm. I replaced the Cunningham brand LP with an Airtex brand LP from Oreilys. Does it matter?

So far, no ticking, no worries about a 140k mi LP, although I didn't have gaskets and used the orange RTV instead, should work ok? right? RIGHT? Oh well whats another oil leak? The tick is dead! Worth $140 and 2 hours of cussing for my sanity and love of Saint Cummins. Ahhhhhhhhhhhh.

12valvetater 03-12-2010 12:57 PM

Well I have no lift pump and mine still ticks.

carl6405 06-07-2014 11:23 PM

I have developed a ticking sound too..Being that it goes away by pressing the purge button, couldn't it be as simple as bleeding the air out of the lines?

4x4manonbroke 06-08-2014 12:11 AM

No ... It will be the lift pump... The slack is why it ticks, allow them to do it long enough and it could pip apart and the parts can fall into oil pan ... And them no run ... Bad deal, I wouldn't recommend the airtex pumps, but ya do what ya have to do ...

carl6405 06-08-2014 01:53 PM

Well, before starting the truck today, I mashed the primer 6 or 7 times. Started, ran around town. Stopped and started the engine a few times, to go into stores. No more clicking. I did, replace the fuel filter a few weeks back and may not have purged all air out of the system. Hopefully the ticking will not come back. 150k miles, hopefully will not need to replace the lift pump soon.

4x4manonbroke 06-08-2014 03:29 PM

Time will tell ...
