nv4500 tranny fluid

i know the nv4500 is suposed to take castrol syntorque 75w-90 oil. napa dont carry it here. isnt it just a synthetic oil? why wouldnt valvoline full synthetic 75-90 gear oil work

FastCR 07-09-2009 10:29 AM

different ratings. you NEED the right fluid or it will take out the trans. You have to get it from chev, dodge, or ams.

94cummins12v 07-09-2009 01:18 PM

well im going to run the valvoline stuff for this trip. ive been running the catrol 80-90 gear oil hypoy c for years so the full synthetic wont hurt for 1000 miles, then ill get the good stuff when i get back

FastCR 07-09-2009 01:59 PM

yeah. its when the fluid starts to break down that it start messing shit up. There's a writeup on dodgeram.org i think.

kazairl 07-09-2009 02:38 PM

from what I understand the Nv4500 reguires a GL-4 fluid. The Valvoline is a GL-5 which has a higher sulfer content. From what I understand the higher sulfer content attacks the yellow metal peices(syncros). However heat also plays a factor. The syncros are in more danger with higher heat because the heat speeds up the process. However a gl-5 fluid runs cooler than a gl-4 so I don't know.

FWIW my dad uses the valvoline stuff and we just replaced his tranny at 300k. Mostly because 3rd gear syncro was gone( it always ground going into gear) and he ended up loosing reverse. They don't carry the Castrol stuff around here either and the Mopar stuff is expensive as hell.

No its not - Castrol is the only oil thats meant to be used with the carbon fiber synchros in the NV-4500.

Using anything else risks a teardown.

FastCR 07-09-2009 04:06 PM

its carbon fiber? coooooool. I'ma start sportin that :U:

Dr. Evil 07-09-2009 04:17 PM

No...not carbon fiber. Had a brain fart.

But they are some sort of fiber and are not the bronze/brass ones like in the NV5600.

Quad4x4 Home sells the oil and the shipping shouldnt be bad for Brandon since they are in Montana.

Some interesting reading here: QUAD 4 x4

Heath 07-09-2009 06:21 PM

We also have one that is made for the NV4500:
gear lube

This is what I used in mine.

Riflemanusmc 07-09-2009 07:52 PM

I'm right up the road from Quad4x4. Any member here needs parts fast, let me know....

BlackDodge 07-09-2009 09:10 PM

Sorry for cutting in, but what about Royal Purple? I put it in mine. Is that bad?

Dr. Evil 07-09-2009 09:30 PM

Its not an "approved" fluid.

stkdram55 07-09-2009 10:02 PM

yeah these thing are super sensitive to the fluid that is run in them, i wouldnt put anything but approved fluid in them...I know its like $20 a quart and takes 10 of em but its cheaper then paying $1000 to get the tranny rebuilt

kazairl 07-10-2009 09:26 AM

10 qts? More like 4 1/2. You really like to overfill your tranny huh?

Also I sent an email to both Bluementhals and Standard transmissions as to why exactly the NV4500 takes the special fluid. Probably won't gain much insight over what was already on Quad4x4 but who knows we might.

Heath 07-10-2009 09:32 AM

Ya, I could never get all 4qt in, usually 3.75. could never get all of the old sucked out(the stuff that sat lower than the drain hole or cover.

kazairl 07-10-2009 11:32 AM

When we installed the tranny in my dads truck we laid the tranny on its side and put the fluid in it before we installed it in the truck.

If its in the truck you could take the stick out(<98 style) or take the shift tower (98-04 style) off and fill it through there. It will take a little longer to get the boots off and stuff but it is a heck of a lot easier to fill it up.

FastCR 07-10-2009 02:03 PM

x2 thats how I did mine. Take out the top pto cover bolt, pop out the shift stub and pour until it starts coming out through the hole.
Many people say to overfill by half a quart.

BlackDodge 07-10-2009 06:51 PM

Sorry about the :hijack: but i was curious cause i just changed it. Well looks like i'm doing it again.

Thanks Guy's!

stkdram55 07-10-2009 06:57 PM

:argh: my bad on the 10 qts thing i was thinking off a slightly bigger tranny i recentyl filled:ouch:

More info:

Ram NV4500 Specifications

# Fluid Capacity: 8.5 pints

* Fill level is to the bottom edge of the fill plug hole.
* These are the ONLY lubricants recommended for the NV4500:
o 75W-90 Castrol Syntorque Synthetic
o Mopar Manual Transmission Lubricant (PN 4637579)
o GM Transmission oil (PN 12346191)
o NOTE: Syntorque is NOT the same as Castrol Syntech.
o Standard Transmission has the oil. 1-800-783-8726

Even though its not on the "approved" oil list - I would probably trust the Amsoil stuff.

Gear Hippo 07-11-2009 08:18 PM

Hello gentleman...first reply...the syncro's are made of kevlar and work well and long only if you use approved fluid...no subs.:pca1:

Dr. Evil 07-11-2009 10:10 PM

Thats right - cant remember everything (or was it anything)....lol

Welcome Hippo :c: .

dan33klein 07-12-2009 07:12 PM

i used redline mt-90 in my nv4500.
shifts smoother and no problems...
highly recomended

FastCR 07-12-2009 07:14 PM

kevlar. sweeeeeeet.

I've got ams on order for my next time around whether it be another trans or fixin this one.

94cummins12v 07-13-2009 09:45 PM

well i will order some of the castrol stuff and put it in the tranny in a few days. as far as filling it i used a oil pump and pumped it in. what i will do instead of throwing the valvoline full synthetic away i will put it in the rear diff of my truck

jaybuller 07-13-2009 09:52 PM

smart thinkin about the valvoline stuff. No need to waist it.

94cummins12v 07-13-2009 09:52 PM

no not if there is only 1000 miles on it beats having to buy it again for $50
