Transmission shifting too much?
In my 1996 3500 the Cummins is great but the weak link in the puzzle is the tranny. It is the four speed auto with overdrive and on the back roads it wants to hold second gear and third seems very elusive. Once in OD it pulls great but the thing seems to either want to scream in second or go to third for just a minute then back again. Is there really any helping this old Mopar tranny? I have been told that shift kits don't generally help in this case but I guess I need more input from people that actually pull loads.

try adjusting bands and change fluid to amsoil

i have a shift kit in mine.when you put one of these in you almost have to put a 3 or 4000 gsk in.if you dont it will shift at a higher rpm wich means it will be defueling thus having no power when it shifts.
|
Forgive my ignorance but what is a 3 or 4000 gsk?
|
it's a governor spring kit.when a stock 12 valve gets around 22-2400 rps's it starts defueling,or losing pull.it's designed that way, kinda like a rev limiter.but you can put a kit in to let it pull to either 3 or 4000 rpm's.then you have full power when it shifts if you have a shift kit, cause the shift kit makes it shift above it's power range.

COOL, THANKS!
