5sp to 6spd?

Is it possible to swamp a NV4500 for a NV5600 ?

toy4xchris 02-25-2009 10:20 PM

I don't see why you couldn't
IMO personally I wouldn't NV went out of business a while back and if anything goes out it would be easier to get replacement parts for the 4500 do to the fact that they were more widely built through out the years

oglejust 02-25-2009 10:33 PM

yeah ppl have done it, u gotta change the clutch and stuff, also the driveshaft is diff.... it costs a lot for the swap

94cummins12v 02-26-2009 02:14 AM

more than just drive shaft, you have to change either t-case or t-case input shafts, longer front driveline, shorter rear driveline, new clutch, flywheel and it aint cheep about 5k on the average swap

if you dont mind me asking why do you want a 6 spd anyway?

Dr. Evil 02-26-2009 12:59 PM

The 5 speed in more fun to drive anyway.

the evil one speaks the truth.

I dont have one I was just wondering if it would be done or if it was worth it.

12valvetater 02-26-2009 07:02 PM

well you can do anything is you have enough money and time. but this i would say is not worth it for a normal person.

HAYMAFIA 02-26-2009 09:26 PM

i dont know if a 6 spd is more durable than a 5 spd but if you trash a 5 spd it is cheaper to rebuild than the 6 spd

12valvetater 02-26-2009 10:38 PM

durability is debatable i got in a big argurment one day with a kid claiming his 6spd is strong than my 5spd but they are a hell of alot cheaper to fix just remember to fix 5th gear!

Heres some swap info I found for you cummin73:

Thanks Dr. Evil. WIch one do you think is more durable. I have heard that the NV 5600 is more durable because they put it behind the HO engine. I am not tryin' to start a fight I just want some information on the two.

12valvetater 02-27-2009 07:17 PM

well most of the sled pullers im firends with around here have 4500s must be a reason

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

the 5600 has a bigger input shaft though from the fatory and the 450s like to spit 5th gear other than that its my choice of the straight sticks:rocking:

I really dont think the 5600 is a whole lot more durable - not for the extra cost and trouble. I would imagine the cost of the swap to be a few thousand bucks at least.

The only reason to really want/need the 5600 is if you tow heavy. Since there is an extra gear, its better for towing. If you run around most of the time in an empty truck - I dont see where this conversion would make much sense.

Heres the gear ratios:

6 speed:

1st 5.63
2nd 3.38
3rd 2.04
4th 1.39
5th 1.00
6th 0.73
R 5.63

5 Speed:

1st 5.61
2nd 3.04
3rd 1.67
4th 1.00
5th 0.75
R 5.61

There good info here if you havent see it before:

I don't know about durability but I know parts for the 4500 would be more accessible than the 5600 and most likely a lot cheaper

12valvetater 02-28-2009 08:55 PM

the 4500 also has a little higher overdrive :choochoo:
