lost power and cant hear turbo
this is not on my truck but a friends.a 97'2500 with 100,000. has no power. It's not missing, it seem like there is no turbo. Changed all filters, local shop told him probally a wastegate actuator. he removed it, capped the line at backside of the pump, wired it closed, still gutless. From what he can see of the hx35w turbo looks good, spins, all fins intact, etc. he have no aftermarket gauges(which will change). Fuel system seem ok. The truck is putting out more black smoke than normal also. Any help would be great.

Possible Boost Leak , Also have him Plug the wastegate via the rubber line on the front of the turbo just cut it and stick a bolt in it

he pulged the line said it didnt help i told him to llok for holes in his intercooler boots and his intercooler.

no looking for holes get them tested there is a thread on here to show how to build a tester, i just bought the blue silicone boots for mine rated for 75psi instead of wasting my time testing, pluse they look sweet with all my yellow dress up under the hood

2nd a leak tester.

Bet you blew a boot off. My truck just did that the other day. It surprised me because I never heard it pop just all of a sudden my truck was gutless and smoke like a train.
Check them all and you'll probably have your problem. This is one job where a 7/16 racheting box end wrench comes in handy. Especially if you blew one of the boots on the intercooler. PITA!!! |

I just seen this. That is NOT your wastegate that is your AFC line and if you cap that the truck will ALWAYS be gutless, because the govenor arm will ride on the AFC foot as opposed to the fuel plate.(basically you've given yourself a permanent valet switch) Unless you've gutted your AFC of course. Just FYI. |
Mine is a 97 12 Valve Cummins 2500 4x4 and it did the same exact thing you are describing. I did all of the things you are talking about too. Turns out, it was the air flow controller, stuck in the idle position. The truck had all the usuall power when crawling in 4X4 low, but when trying to get up to speed on the highway, it might take four or five miles to get it up to 70 MPH and if I hit a little hill, I had to start all over.
Check the air flow controller, also, I'm freinds with a couple of practical jokers who thought it might be funny to put a wal mart sack over my air filter, it produces the same effect and it's NOT funny. LOL |
get some BD power hose clamps and boots!
