Truck geling up
 

I have a 97 3500. I put the power service anit gel in. I put the whole bottle. treats up to 100 gallons. it keeps geling up. is there a fuel heater? I havent had time to look its to dam cold right not. 2 degress this morning.

With that much treatment in the tank theres no way its gelling :humm: How do you know its gelling up? Whats the truck doing? If it is gelling did you change the fuel filter and put additive in the filter housing? The filter itself could be froze up with gunk not allowing enough flow... More info please :c:

Yeah, have you changed the fuel filter?. Get yourself a bottle of Diesel 911 (Red Bottle and pur some in the filter and some in the tank). You might also try putting an electric heating pad around the filter housing if you think its gelled up. Also, plug the truck in for 3 hours as well.

BTW, 2 degrees isnt even approaching cold. I run my 12V in -30+ temps for a good part of the winter.

You do have a fuel heater. It's connected to the pre-filter. Do as Doc said but also clean out your prefilter. This will give you a chance to check out your fuel heater and make sure it's plugged in.

Fuel Pre-Filter Cleaning on Ram/Cummins - The connector show in the picture is for our fuel heater. I've heard of several people removing them because they leak instead of replacing them with a new part. Yours may be gone.

I don't remember what the heater is supposed to ohm out at though so I can't tell you how to test it. If the circuit is open then you obviously have a bad one.

Well I pulled the fuel filter off man was it nasty. there was water in it and dirt. withthe 911 and diesel fuel. it cranked up ran good for about a 1 min then died. wouldnt crank back. So I took the bleader screw out and tryed to manual put it. and little air then it quit nothing at all. So I thing the little pump went out. I ordered a new one today. so tomorrow we will see if it was the problem. I have had problems before when it gets around 20. when I go to start it I have to give it alittle fuel. but Iam going to clean the whole system tomorrow. yes I did put a new fuel filter. $30.00 dam dollars for a wix. thats high

if the filter had water and gunk in it, you may want to check it again cause you may have a whole tank of that crap.

Yes, thats a good point. I thend to think you got a tank with a lot of water. Diesel shouldnt gel at 2 degrees (unless its straight number 2 diesel).

I doubt the lift pump is the problem here.

Well the truck wasnt gel up. Iam getting air in the system. I just put a new fuel pump on. when I go to blead it iam getting air. All my lines on my pump are tight. Has anyone had this problrem before. Iam bleading it on the bleader screw on top of the filter like I said air.

After you get it bled to the filter, crack injectors 1, 3 &5. Be very careful around spraying fuel as its about 15000 psi - dont get your hands anywhere near it.

You dont even need FUEL HEATER i have mine bypassed the return fuel heats your fuel

the thing is I cant get my fuel blead to my fuel filter. I did at first it started and ran good for a sec. then died cause it is getting air in the system. I tryed and tryed bleading it at the fuel filter. could the fuel heater be the cuase of the air in the system

yes, the fuel heater can be the cause of air in the system - thats why people remove them.

Have you ever replaced your rubber fuel lines? There are 4 in total - 2 supply and return at the tank and 2 supply and return at the front of the truck.

how did you bypass the fuel heater ? I am having the same problem it was -5 this morning truck started ran well then act like it ran out of fuel. I put some 911 in the tank and it did not seem to help so I believe I may have an air leak as well. It is up to 10 degees now with the 911 in it should be fine. It starts runs well then quits 4 or 5 minutes later.

i also eliminated mine beacuse of air leaks. is very simple just change your fuel lines to bypass the heater

ha that thing is a heater? ha I thought those were little on block lift sumps lol I heard, on ole 12v the they had lil pusher pumps on the block. well that makes sense now lol ya those rubber hoses have a tendency to leak I got an old 12v on a stand and im tryin to fire it up before I put any money into it lol how long does that heater run for? just start up or continuously?

I thought I had a geling problem with the cold Put a quart of DFS in system did nothing put 8 oz of 911 in tank still same . It would start and run out of fuel could not get over 1000 rpm. I removed filter expecting to find ice filter looked fine. changed it anyway and put half 911 in with the diesel fuel that was in there. bled and same problem. It was not getting fuel to injectors . Took hair dryer to the injection pump. Truck started and is running well now so blockage was in the injector pump. probably crappy fuel . I will be more diligent where I get my fuel. Since the temp has risen above 40 the dfs I previously put in is well mixed. I drove the truck an hour expecting another deep freeze tonight . We will see if I have cured the problem.:jump::jump:
