Bad Injector?????

95 dodge ram 2500 cummins.truck has problems from time to time it starts shaking like a roller coaster ride, dont know what it is, i thought it was the death wobble everyone talks about but the front end is tight, all new parts. i checked fuel pressure from the lift pump its fine.i thought it was my manual shut off its not that either. everyone i talked to cant pin it down and im not close enough to a good diesel mechanic , so im stuck doing the work myself by reading books and internet. im thinking bad injector,im frustrated, i could use some help thanks.:ouch::argh::argh::argh:

Diesel Dave 2 01-10-2009 06:04 PM

Are we talking about a front end shake or is the motor bucking??

dodgeman129 01-10-2009 06:40 PM

its the motor bucking

big_dog37074 01-10-2009 08:28 PM

sounds like an injector. What I would is if it does it when your parked is lossen one injector line at a time to see which cylinder it is. you can go get the injector checked. If it was bad I would just go ahead and by a new set but that is me though. just depends on your money.
if it is missing you will know it to. cause it fills like the truck is going to fall apart. is it oil smoking any.

dodgeman129 01-10-2009 09:14 PM

when the truck shakes im just driving normal down the road and it dont blow any smoke, but it dont do it all the time its weird but if im in park and i rev it up when it gets to about 2700 rpm it like misses and blows gray smoke

gone ropin 01-10-2009 10:16 PM

i feel your pain:argh:, thought it was my injectors, ended up being a cracked barrel on my p pump on #5 , but got a new one on the way, doing the head and springs and studs while its down:madd:, damm stuff costs money.:ouch:

dodgeman129 01-10-2009 10:21 PM

yea i hear the money thing, bad thing is theres no good diesel mechanic in my area it sucks i gotta do my own work

cummins24 01-10-2009 10:31 PM

The upside to that is it'll help you get more familiar with your rig if you don't already know it inside and out :U:

Diesel Dave 2 01-11-2009 07:38 AM

Could it be a sticky plunger in the p-pump?

dodgeman129 01-11-2009 10:17 AM

it might be a sticky plunger but i dont know alot about the p-pumps other than what i read,im the second owner of the truck first onwer screwed me he must have been hard on the truck ive had it for 2 yrs and ive put over 5,000 dollars in it and about to put about another 3,000 dollars into it if i find whats wrong with the truck.

Diesel Dave 2 01-11-2009 11:11 AM

I'm not sure of this....but could slipped timing cause this?I'm, just putting out some ideas for the other members. The plungers you could check yourself by taking the DV out and see if there is no dirt or corrsion..or sticking of the DV...Sure looks like to put alot of money into the truck..Maybe take the injectors out...to check if they are coked up on the ends..The second ower could of ran some bad bio diesel or dirty WVO...

big_dog37074 01-11-2009 01:17 PM

Well can you take the injectors out yourself if so call someone who can check them out for you. then go from there. hopefully it is an injector. does it miss all the time or just cold?

dodgeman129 01-11-2009 05:57 PM

its weird it dont miss all the time but when it does its only when im driving down the road and it dont matter if its hot or cold

Diesel Dave 2 01-11-2009 07:42 PM

By some chance does the truck shut itself down at highway speeds but runs ok in town?I had a shutdown problem on the highway and did everything. It landed up to be the IP.But we will not go with a IP just yet...

scottsjeeprolet 01-11-2009 07:47 PM

Your not too far from Lloyd Mills in Hagerstown. He hasMid Atlantic diesel performance He also has a 1289HP Cummins.

dodgeman129 01-12-2009 07:17 PM

it dont ever shut off,but it dont have the power i think it should, but when i get to a certain speed the passing gear wont kick in the truck will only do about 80 that its and it takes a good bit to get there but i think thats the tranny. i had no idea there was a diesel place in hagerstown thats good to know

Diesel Dave 2 01-12-2009 09:50 PM

When you punch it....Does it smoke alot????When I got my truck it was gutless...Found that the fuel shutoff switch was not pulling the linkage far enough enough for full power.Have you checked your fuel pressure yet???Maybe your overflow valve is bad.I think this is the first step.Check your shutoff switch and make sure its pulled all the way.Next check fuel pressure.....This will give us a good start to find your problem...

dodgeman129 01-13-2009 06:29 PM

no it dont smoke alot when i punch it,well it hardly smokes at all really unless im in park and rev it up to about 2700 rpms then it blows gray smoke,it has a pull out for the shut off and i checked that its not the problem, and the fuel pressure to LP is good, and the pressure out of the LP is good, the overflow valve where is that at on the top of the fuel filter housing or on the injector pump, but ill tell ya i replaced the LP about a yr ago and that fixed alot it would shut off on me while i was driving down the road and i had to floor it to get it to start and it would miss and carry on till she started getting fuel.

Diesel Dave 2 01-13-2009 10:01 PM

The OFV is located on the IP....When you tested your fuel pressure, what pressure did you have at idle and about 2000RPM?.....It sounds like your not getting the fuel. There is another thing to check, is what is called the fuel heater element. There is a fuel screen in there that is famous to dirt build up...

dodgeman129 01-14-2009 05:37 PM

ill check that out this weekend and call my local dodge dealer about getting parts.i ran the truck today.10 degree weather she fired right off no problems ran perfect. im starting to think i got a diesel gremlin under the hood:howdy:

Diesel Dave 2 01-14-2009 08:12 PM

Lets hope the diesel gremlin goes away forever...:U:

dodgeman129 01-14-2009 08:26 PM

yea i hope but i aint taking no chances the truck has been a money hog. id like to get another dodge preferably a clubcab with less miles.but cant afford one so im stuck fixing the one i got.

big_dog37074 01-18-2009 06:33 PM

I had the same thing happen to me this weekend it got 2 here, and I thought the fuel was geling on me. It didnt miss all the time just sometimes missed bad when it did. Well it wasnt gel up. Well then I changed the fuel filter blead the whole system. it started ran good for about a min then died. it was getting are in the system. so after putting a new lift pump on and thinking it was the gel up. it was just the fuel heater. but the lift pump wasnt working as good as it should have been though. So I just bypassed the fuel heater. I found out that alot of people do that cause you can run into problems with it on there like I did. so if you still have it on there bypass it

dodgeman129 01-19-2009 08:49 PM

well i didnt have time to check it this weekend but i hauled some coal and pulled a ford dumptruck and drove75 80 mph up uphill on a freeway with no problems she ran perfect. but i think im having tranny problems now so i can never win :pca1:

dodgeman129 01-23-2009 09:23 PM

well the shaking back this time much worse it about threw me through the windshield today. i think its definitly a fuel problem,i got new fuel lines from the tank to the fuel filter and the lift pump, but when i went to take the fuel heater bowl off to check the strainer in it , it was stuck tight i rounded the bolt off:ouch:.but for some reason i was messing around and was pushing the primer button on the lift pump and heard air coming from the side of the injector pump facing the motor is this normal?????:humm:
