help Hard starting 96

after i straight piped stock exhaust starts and stalls then have to use gas pedal to start then sometimes loads up have to hold it open 1500 for a few seconds then its fine just first start of the day,Another way i try to start it is pop it of and accelerate up and down ,if i just hold it steady it will stall if i feather it will stay running do this for 15 seconds and then will idle. only under 30 degrees does it have this problem. It has new fuel filter and k&n AF start everytime after that runs great .seems like it run out of fuel for a second its 3500 extc 4x4 auto 410s gets 19 mpg city and at 80 mph i live in C.O. springs 6000 ft could use some easy tricks for more safe power thanks

Well I sort of have the same problem. When I start mine I have to give it alittle fuel to. But when I plug it up at night its fine starts good. Have you tryed plugging it up. Its hard on a diesel to start one cold. gets seals and all that good stuff. I have had to replace 2 rear main seals. thats why I plug it up now. another thing raise your idle up for the winter alittle. advancing the timing on the pump helps starting too. fixing to have that done.

I have had similar problem with my 95' but what i did was turned the injection up a little bit and upped the idle and now she runs like a top.

its a back pressure issue, my budies 95 cummins did that as well, so we tuned everything to match the stack, ran great till he took his stacks off now he as to hit the go petal to start it and at stop lights he has to keep the RPMs up just to keep her running, no matter what the temp is outside

what do you suggest it doesnt smoke never has it was 140 rear wheels on dyno at 6000ft completly stock thanks i was thinking of getting a tst power kit for $300 they say gives you 230/605lb ,also smells alot stronger out pipe now

What does your truck idel at when in gear with ac on? Should be 800 rpm minimum. If not, bump the idle up.

As for the TST kit, you can buy the same thing off on ebay (and our sponsors) for a lot less.

Seen in the other thread - your idle is too low. Bump it up. Heres how:

I'd start with the idle like Doc said.

You also said it seemed to run out of fuel at the higher end?

Try cleaning your pre-filter screen HERE if you haven't done it.

Could be an overflow valve giving you some troubles too. HERE

Personally, I'd start with the idle, then the screen and then the overflow. You can stretch that spring a bit. If that makes it better then you need a new overflow valve.

I still have a muffler on mine. you still have to give it alittle fuel. back pressure doesnt have a thing to do with it starting anyways. its not getting the fuel it needs when its cold or the idle is to low. Jamie you can get a torque plate off of ebay around 75-100 dollars get the timing advanced, cold air. you will be happy. I wouldnt go more than 16 on the timing. unless you just want more then go with bigger injectors.
