Will a steel feeler gauge damage the ESS?

My truck has been having an intermittent problem simular to losing the ESS ( engine speed sensor). The symptoms have been erratic tach behavior, check engine light turning on, warning lights flashing on the bottom of the climate control panel, losing overdrive and lockup. All other computer functions still work: Speedometer, engine temp, fuel gauge, etc....
This has happened three times in two months

The truck is new to me as of July of this year and I have not driven it that much due to the injection pump going out after purchasing it. ( Thanks Lithia Dodge :dang: ).
I replaced the injection pump, sealed the KDP and reset the gap on the ESS.
I smacked a deer with the truck two months ago and that seems to be when the problem began to occur.
The erratic behavior once during moderate temperatures while exiting the freeway and twice in the past two weeks with the cold weather cover on the front of the truck while driving below 45mph. The problem does not manifest itself with sustained freeway speeds with the cold weather cover on.
I'm thinking it might be heat related but I have read a couple of times now that using a metal feeler gauge can damage the ESS.

Battery contacts are clean and the grounds are clean.
