12 Valve Engine Problem
I just purchased a 96 12valve engine. It ran when pulled from truck. now you can only turn the engine a half turn. the guy pulled the front cover, IP gear and power steering pump. KDP still in hole we have no clue why it wont turn over. oil pan not crushed, was fully covered up, no water or dirt could get into engine. not sure what else could have gone wrong. the engine has 212K on it, it is a 160 motor.
Thanks |
How long has it sat? Could be enough rust in the cylinders to make thing hard. Squirt some WD-40 or motor oil into the cylinders.

not sure prolly 4-6 months, didnt ask. Im gonna go get it tuesday. so once i pull the injectors ill post back at what may be the problem. I got this thing on a real deal so it dont matter too much. i am gonna slowly rebuild it from the bottom up with completely different and aftermarket parts. just wanted to see what everyone thought.
thanks |
is it motor and tranny out of the 96 or just motor? if the new to you motor is in the truck could the flexplate / converter be in a bind?
oh and if it's a 96 it's a 180 motor if it was in front of an auto or 215 if in front of a 5 speed |
no its just motor out of truck with the flexplate and TC still hooked. I looked at the timing cover and it said 160 HP unfortunatly. Even still for the price i paid i really aint gonna complain too much.
I will check the flexplate though didnt even think about it. Thanks |
The stick shift 96 trucks were the 195 pump, not the 215 IIRC. But it is weird that its a 96 with a 160. Is it a CARB truck with EGR?
Your problem kinda sounds like what whitmore said, a little ring of rust will grab the piston ring, and jam it just enough that you can't turn it. A little PB Blaster or a good penetrating lube and it'll release its grip. If that doesn't solve it your gonna have to pull the oil pan and look there, then the top end, and work your way through it. |
is the motor in the truck or on the floor in a shop? if the converter was left on there maybe someone tried to remove it and couldn't get one of the bolts out and it's wedged?

I always thought there was a 96.5 change over. But some people on Comp D said it wasent and that 96 was a full year. Could the first part of 96 be 195hp and the second half be 215?

well there is no egr maybe a late 95 early 96. could be like my moms truck, its a 98 built 11-97 with a 24valve not a 12. i heard they didnt put 24 valves in till january. and yes it is a factory that way.
Im gonna go pick it up tomorrow night after i figure out a way to stabilize it in the back of the truck. im hoping just the flex plate and/or TC bolt. I think i got a deal, full complete engine, starter, alternator, f/p, IP, Power steering pump, vacuum pump, turbo, full wiring harness all for under $1000. ill let ya's know. |
