Tranny problem?!?

Ok im fairly new to the dodge world and im looking into buying this 97 cummins with an automatic tranny and the guys tell me that the tranny acts up every once in a while. And this is what he tells me it does.

Ok everytime you start it and take off you have to let off of it to let it shift from first after that it dont do it. And when its really wet out every once in a while when you take off from a start it will shift from first straight into overdrive. And acts stupid. But if you shut her off and fire it back up its just fine.. He tells me that the transmission shop said it was a $200 speed sensor?! Any truth in that?

So is the tranny shot? Or about to be shot? Any help would be appreciated

how many miles are on the tranny. i have a 97 too and these 47re's dont last that long at all. when i bought mine it was rebuilt (he had the receipt) and it only had 30,000 on the new tranny when it started to slip a lot and wouldnt shift right. i just went for it and got it rebuilt. i just got the new tranny back in probably a month ago and its already leaking out of the front main seal :argh: thank god its under the warranty still. if i was you i would tell the guy the trannys probably shot and it need to be rebuilt completely with all new sensors. and while your at it i would put a shift kit in it. helps the shifting a lot. your problem could also be in your valve body, or an electrical issue. its hard to track em down.

how many miles? sounds like the its slipping, and getting to hot, when you shut it off it has time to cool down a little. that would be my guess. my transmission went at 82,000 miles and it was serviced regularly so they definitely aren't good transmissions. i would be a little Leary of buying that. just my .02c
