auto to a manuel swap?

what would it take to swap from an auto trans to a nv5600 or g56?

somkincummins95 11-17-2014 08:54 AM

my truck is a 95 12v with the 47rh

the 5600 and G56 will not be fun. they are large units (200 pound heavier than an NV4500) and they do not "bolt right up".

I swapped my 47rh for a 4500.

I should extrapolate: the transmission output will not match the input on the transfer case. you'll need to find a transfer case from a 6 speed truck (or, you may be able to use a 241HD, if the 5600 still uses a 29 split output. I do not know for certain). I am fairly certain the G56 would require a 271 over a 241.

the driveshafts will require modification, as the 5600 will be a different length than that of your 47rh. if you require a different transfer case, the yoke on the driveshaft will need to match the output of the transfer case. This may also be more fun with the G56 than the 5600, as the G56 is infront of a different differential.

the transmission crossmember may need to be changed, modified, or remade.

a little bit of wiring needs to be done, for cruise, a clutch safety switch (on mine, this actually plugged into the brake safety switch. Kid ya not) and reverse lights.

I swapped out the auto on my 97 and put in a G56. As Slim says, it is involved. I had to swap the 241 for a 271, change the input shaft, shorten the rear driveshaft and change the front yoke, lengthen the front one, change from vacuum actuated to manual cable. The 56 has a different clutch slave cylinder and the transmission mount is different. The clutch pedal and its mounting platform are slightly different from the auto too. Wiring. Lots of nuances to this. Can be done readily enough, just involved. I wouldn't ever trade back to an auto though, love that standard.

I put the g56 in my 12v. It was prolly the most simple swap I have ever done. The factory tcase will mount strait up. Need a 4500 adapter plate. I'm sad to say I'm running a sb dd clutch and stock 4500 hydros have been working just fine with no issues for around 6months. Hardest part is the crossmember and custom driveshafts.

no it won't. . .

his auto t case uses a 23 spline input. the G56 uses a 29 spline (or different again, I cannot recall) output. he will at least need to swap the input on his 241.

Converting from auto 4 x 4 to 5 spd manual 4 x 4 well I have to have the manual transmission crossmember as well. 2002 2500 extended cab long bed. Trans is coming out of a signal cab long chassis.

I can't say what's involved to do this in a Dodge, but my Gm was easy enough.
The fire wall is ready to accommodate the pedals and the master cylinder.
In my case the engine required moving the trans back. Move cross member 3". Drill 4 holes.
Pay somebody to resize the shafts. Pull the auto shift lever and then leave the column alone.
Cut a hole in the floor for the 5 speed shifter. Done.

I never did get around to hooking up a neutral safety switch.
