engine side cover gasket

i need to replace the engine side cover gasket on my 96 ram the mechanic priced me $600 to do it the instructions i find online say i have to pull the injector pump to do it is this true pulling the pump worries me am i going to have timing or alignment issues if i do ? is there a way to do it without pulling the pump or should i just cough up the money to have it done ?

I think you can pin the pump and the motor and timing won't be an issue for you but as far as how to go about doing that I am not sure this is my first 12 valve. Sorry :humm:

It all depends on how mechanically inclined you are and what your comfort level is. not all that hard if you are pretty good around a motor, you can get it off without pulling the pump but it is much easier to pull it.

you can loosen the pump, leave the gear in place and pull the IP off the the side and do the work. .. ITS NOT SIMPLE BY ANY MEANS .. But , Its do-able ..:tu:

thanks for the advice guys i am no expert but pretty handy with a wrench i used to work on older heavy equipment quite a bit but pickup trucks are a whole different story dozers and trackhoes had access covers for just about everything cars and trucks seem like i am always having to take to much unrelated stuff off just to make a clearing to where i need to be

Know the feeling .. I do trucks and Busses .. Pickups can SUCK to work on @ times ... :argh:

I'm used to working on off-road cat stuff and what a change, my fat hands don't like the light truck stuff.:dang:

HERD THAT !!!! :argh::ouch:

Jeff.Hopper 08-25-2014 04:13 PM

yep i would trade handling heavier parts for not having to take everything else apart to get to what i need to work on in a heartbeat trying to wiggle my hands down there and work blind gives me a case of the :moon::moon:

Yeah, BUT .. Its worth it in the end over all .. most people cant seem to even replace a dang spark plug with out issues ..:lol:
