Stainless diesel turbos

Was wondering if anyone has experience with stainless diesel turbos. Cpp also sells them, they seem to be a good price compared to other company's offering similar products. Looking into a billet 63/68/14. If I can't get much info on them if probably just spend the extra bucks on a engineered diesel turbo.

in so many of these turboes, people are getting an identical piece with a different name on it. 65,68,71 or 74mm genuine turbines and 12 or 14cm housings. there are some exceptions with in house turbine housings, like mine is a SS unit from HTT. comp wheels can get custon depending on if they are billet or class specific but in most cases you get a cast OE compressor wheel straight from schwitser 62,64 or 66mm. its a name thing like John Deere or Kudota. your in most cases are paying a few hundred $$$ more for a name nothing more. any size s300 turbo can be built for around $1400 and the builder still making money. its a combination of what turbine housing machined to what size same for the compressor cover and comp wheel and presto you have a super B special or a silver phatshaft or a screaming eagle. they get more expensive with aftermarket comp wheels as the wheels cost about $500 and sometimes the bearing housings require a little machining.

hope that was enlightening :c:

Thanks, I just can't really justify paying 2500 for a htt 63.5/68/14 with the forge milled wheel over 1500 for a stainless 63/68/14 with a billet comp wheel and built to bolt in place of my he351 unless there is actually a significant difference. Same with something like a ED turbo. I hear the 63/68 is around 1900 "custom" built but is there really a difference. I'd like a turbo sooner then later but saving an extra 500-1000 or more takes a little while and if there's no difference if opt for the cheaper one.

the difference is the billet 63mm comp wheel. its a class specific wheel. so nothing comes OE with that wheel. making for machining of a comp cover and bearing housing. say $200 for machining and $500 for a wheel and your $700 more for what? there is flow differences with the 63 over a 62 but is the extra 10hp your going to see on the dyno really be worth the extra money? in so very many cases a billet wheel is NOT NEEDED. plain and simple. it sells because of the word billet. my cast 62 was louder than the 6 blader i run now and really i cant note a difference on the comp side.

Thanks for the advice. I'm going to called engineered and see what they say and unless it seems substantial for whatever extra price it is I'll likely go with the stainless diesel billet 63/68/14 from cpp.

I would think that due to the stainless steel holding more heat that it may also cause the oil to cook in the turbo more .. a turbo cool down timer wouldnt be a bad investment if your going with a SS turbo .. my .02$ :tu:

The company is called stainless diesel :p not a stainless ex housing.
