Clicking noise after dv, injectors and stud install

So I just finished installing dv, head gasket and studs, and new injectors. Truck sat for almost. Month. Right after starting it and warming up the first time I noticed it makes a clicking noise. It only is really noticable when standing back from the truck at idle. Also seems to happen at low rpm. Once it loads up in 3rd for example it seems to go away and cannot be heard from the cab, but once I let off it seems to come back but only really noticeable if I'm driving beside a wall or something it can echo off. Sometimes it's there, and sometimes it's not, also seems to go with rpm sometimes but goes away or changes rhythm sometimes aswell. Heat doesn't seem to make a diff. Can be heard from both sides but seems more noticeable on the drivers side. And hard to pin point, when I crawl under the truck can't really hear it and when I pop the hood can't hear it at all. I'm pretty stumped. Going to take a stethoscope tonight and check the pump. Sure hope it's not the ip, was running fine before all the work.

Hope you torques the studs , then the rocker pedistals then adjusted the rockers ...

In that order .... get it warm, let it sit over night ... then loosen the rockers and re-torque head, then re-run the over head adjustment ...

I did it all to arp spec. Drove one night. Let sit over night then re torqued and all held 99% of torque only needed a ft lb or 2 on a couple and re did the valve lash. All should be well in that regard. I will likely do another torque check and valve lash check tomorrow. When it's cold. It doesn't sound like. Valve lash clicking. I've read the stock ofv can cause a ticking. Thinking maybe my big injectors and dv have dropped fuel pressure further. Ordered a Tork tek 060 valve. No stock lift pump so I know it's not that.

yeah I did my OFV as well ... low FP was my other issue .. and I deleted my fuel heater as well .. :yeah:

I'm starting to think it's exhaust. It doesn't sound mechanical, and kind of varies. I stethoscoped the pump and valve covers and all the barrels and nothing seems to click.

Could be a small exhaust leak starting ....:humm:

It's incredibly hard to pin point and I have a 3rd gen manifold and turbo so it's difficult to tighten some on the bolts. Going to give it a shot from under the truck and tighten some stuff up but if that doesn't fix it I'm stumped. Only can be heard from outside the truck or slightly under it and nothing when the hood is open so can't see it being any pump or valve train parts.

Sounds like a warped manifold or possibly a gasket issue .. start in the cente and work your way out .. you know that I'm sure !!! :tu:

wpg6.5 07-19-2014 09:42 AM

Tightened down what I could. Manifold shouldn't be warped as it's a 2 piece so should clamp pretty even. Felt around and saw no exhaust staining, loosened and re tightened the dp clamp. Nothing. I'm now completely stumped lol I think I'm going to turn my visit to the local diesel shop into them searching for the noise.

4x4manonbroke 07-19-2014 11:25 AM

How much did they mill off the head or did you do a 1 @ a time install ?

If so I'm thinking your "noise" ... could be something a bit more involved ...

wpg6.5 07-19-2014 12:33 PM

.06 and I put a .10 over cummins gasket on it.

4x4manonbroke 07-19-2014 08:54 PM

HUH ... :humm:

Probably the DV's ticking in the Inj lines ???? or ??

any news , have you located anything thats a possible suspect ?

wpg6.5 07-19-2014 09:34 PM

Well checked my valve lash and all was well except the rear cyl was a tad loose. Mostly ex. So tightened it up and the ticking seems nearly gone the 2 times I drove it. Knock on wood. Hoping they might have just been a bit loose and kind of echoed. Finding another problem though. :( 6 of my new valve seals have rode up the valves. Machine shop didn't have tooling to machine for new style seal so I used the old style traditional press on. So I have some work ahead of me.

4x4manonbroke 07-19-2014 09:48 PM

.. #6 being loose was probably the MAIN issue ..

The Valve seals shouldnt cause too much issues .. it will keep the oil from going down the valve stems .... I have seen some that .. I dunno .. "float" a bit ... I always thought it was normal for that style or something .... ? Could I be wrong ? :humm:

wpg6.5 07-20-2014 11:37 AM

Haven't drove her yet today but hoping 6 being a little loose contributed to how loud it was. Makes sense though I guess. Ya all they really do is stop oil from leaking down. Not going to hurt anything but pretty mad. Now gotta pull the rocker pedistals off 5 of the cyl and re do at least one seal. Not sure if I should buy new or try to push these back down. Shoulda just got the head machined at a diff place who had the tooling but waited so long I was getting impatient. Gotta love pointless work. I guess the fact the other 6 stayed down is good :s lol

4x4manonbroke 07-20-2014 10:52 PM

Yeah .. Do keep us posted on weather or not is starts tossin out blue smoke or consuming oil ... hope the "TICK" is gone too ... :c:

wpg6.5 07-21-2014 12:37 PM

Well not much has changed. Noise is still there but really not worried at this point. Comes and goes. Been ripping the truck pretty good trying to set up the afc and all that and hasn't gotten worse. So for now I'm just gonna ignore it. Everything else is the same. Oil burns at it's regular rate, prob a lil higher since 6 valve seals are riding up till I fix em but nothing weird. Starts and drives fine. Thinking maybe it was a noise I just never noticed before. Or perhaps the significantly higher pop pressure of the injectors is creating it. At this point I'm done worrying until something happens. I have a 060 ofv coming for it soon and my intake horn then will fix the seals. And I think my ofv is shot because it needs a tap of the peddle to get her started when cold

4x4manonbroke 07-21-2014 09:56 PM

yeah could be from the return line as well ...
