1500-2000 RPM Sputter/Pop

Ok so my truck now randomly starts to act up,like it has a mind of it own!So i lest to go get some dinner and truck ran fine going to dinner! Before i left let her warm up for about 10 min then had about a 7 mile drive to my first stop, shut the truck off went into the store for about 15 min came out started right up,second stop same started great ran smooth! Was going threw the drive threw and noticed white smoke coming out the pipe, sat at idle for 10 min went to pull out on the street and mashed on it and she hit 2000 rpms and popped and sputtered! So kept driving started to go up a grade and she would on shift to 2nd and hit 1800-2000 and sputter! And if i let off the pedal she would die or drop down to 550-600 rpms! Finally made it home!!15 min drive turned into a 45 min drive!HELP ME!!:argh::scare2:

What's the fuel pressure look like between the lift pump and the IP? If you've got good pressure, I'd start looking into your timing.

I have no clue but it randomly does it?I looked at the lift pump i just replaced and it looks like the little hose between the lift pump and pre-filter is cinked a little bit?:humm:Also looks like a White cloud pours out my pipe when it does this too!

X2 on the timing bro.

Ya did some more looking around and could my injectors be bad at 200k miles? But i was going to do my timing anyways but how come its random?:humm:

It happens, dude.

timing just slips sometimes too ... i am planning to use some loctite on mine when i get to that point in the re-building process ... its for slip fit shafts and stuff like that ...

LoctiteŽ 609

Oughtta do the trick ... I'm going to call them and reserch this as a possibility ... dont want this "slippin" happinin to me ... :td::nope:

Never had it happen to me *knock in wood* but I've heard of folks that couldn't get it to stay with any other method using lapping compound working the gear on the pump back and fourth, clean and reinstall.

when was the last time you put a fuel filter on it?

I have had two brand new fuel filters in it in the last 100-150 miles:ouch:

replace the fuel line with the crack ... drive and report :c:

If it was a air intrusion in one of the fuel lines wouldn't be hard to get her to start up again? When it dies on me it fires right back up?!

yes air make it very hard starting.

fuel heater screen clear?
i forget what is the fuel pressure?

4x4manonbroke 03-19-2014 06:48 PM

if it were on the suction side it would make a sputter though .. especially @ higher rmp ...

12vcumminspower7 03-19-2014 07:45 PM

I have no idea what the fuel pressure is but i just replaced the lift pump and deleted the fuel heater and cleaned the pre filter but im have a guy advance the timing for me and see if that fixes it:tu:

4x4manonbroke 03-20-2014 03:59 PM

Careful unless u have studs .... Don't go more that 17-18 until u get et studded up... Blown HG is a real buzz kill ...:argh::s:

12vcumminspower7 03-20-2014 04:18 PM

I've read up and 16-16.5* sounds pretty safe:humm:Im not tryin to make a race truck or anything just a truck that I can race some gasser and diesels for fun and not get my a** handed to me:tttt:

Bigg Redd 03-24-2014 08:08 PM

Hmmmm, I predict a headgasket failure coming soon...........please stand by.:w2:

4x4manonbroke 03-26-2014 09:51 AM

Yeah ... Me too ...:argh:

its not the timing alone that will blow a HG ... High drive pressure, timing, fuel, and boost combine to create a high cylinder pressure and also higher cylinder temps can vaporize. Coolant on the top of the cylinders inside the head causing spikes in coolant pressure ..... Add this all up ... Pop goes the HG .... While studs are never a guarantee... It a great way to have assurance that ist not gonna be immediate... Ask me how I learned all that ... ? :s:
