Head Studs?
 

Hello fellow diesel nuts.

I recently installed a T/C lockup switch and realized all of the potential my truck has. If i could get it to rev out more that would help out quite a bit.

The upgrades i have are as follows:

-BHAF
-4" turbo back(mufflerless):rocking:
-boost elbow (approx 35-38psi)
-.024 delivery valves
-no fuel plate
-star wheel cranked up a bit
- and of course lockup switch

I am looking into buying 4K governor spring kit next along with 60lb valve springs :tu:

I dont want to be blowing out a head gasket or risking any major engine damage but if I dont need to spend crazy money for studs right now then I wont.

I would just like to have some knowledge and or opinions from people who have experience using them

Its hard to answer your head sutd question without knowing how you drive, with a modded truck many here will tell you head studs are needed but sometimes there not. IMO with stock timing and if you keep your pressures in check with the stock trubo you will be just fine without headstuds for a DD. For racing,pulling or when more timing/ bigger trubos come into play is when you should have headstuds.

I will also say this just because you install headstuds does not mean you still can't blow a headgasket

Yeah I got studs on eBay for 417.00 ...so its not too crazy spendy ... Compared to a new turbo ... And you will also need milled rocker pedestals also ... And its just damn good insurance .... And yes u can pop one with high boost and timing ... Especially if u lug it ..

alright well I dont drive it like a complete asshole but i do like to get on her real good about once everytime im out. I was looking at performance head bolts from mightdiesel rated for 70psi seems like a pretty good step up from stock because it appears i dont need studs yet.


Also I am looking for more information on how to go about changing my valves and how big of a job it is and if there is an easy way to keep vavles from dropping

I'm gonna assume you mean change you valve springs and not the valves. Its pretty simple get a good spring compressor and roll the motor over till the cylinder you are working on is at TDC. Valve can only drop a little bit than.

IMO, if you don't tow heavy/often and stay under 40psi, you don't need head studs.
