1996 12v

my friend just got this 1996 12v cummins and it wont smoke. I don't want a bunch of smoke but with no fuel plate and star screw wfo intake straight pipe it does not smoke and wont even think about it at idle my 12v with a #0 flate dumps smoke why wouldn't the one with no plate smoke going from a #8 plate to no plate was not too much different but some what good smoke and more boost in overdrive

Could be the lift pump failing, fuel shut-off, or trans can't handle it and is slipping to much to load the engine. Mine does that

he got the truck with 258,000 miles i think it is original tranny and i dont know about the lift pump. I can see someone took the head off and clocked all the bolts with new head gasket i dont know why they needed a new one. I kinda thought mabye they tryed to mess with the timing:humm:

Have you checked the fuel shut off solenoid mine was only partially open when I took out the fuel plate and it did almost nothing. Very little power and a little smoke. As far as timing I'm pretty sure you don't have to pull off the head for that. If he is still getting good power out of it and it doesn't choke under full throttle I would run it clean like it is.

No ya don't need to pull the head for timing ... just pull the timing gear off the IP ... easier to show than explained ... check you tube for videos on 12v timing ...

Smoke is just a sign of unburnt fuel ... its just a waste of energy and causes higher EGT's and oil dilution issues ... carbon build up .. etc ...:td:

i know the timing is in the injection pump but since they threw the new gasket on they properly did the timing just cus there is so much more room while the head is off

I don't think taking the head off really gives that much room for timing but has the afc been messed with at all? Does the truck have an get gauge to see what the temps look like? Hit the block with a laser gun to check cylinder temps? It really sounds like a lift pump problem or a solenoid problem but sometimes when the lift pumps start to die it will smoke more. Just usually a greyish smoke if I remember correctly. I would see how his egts are running in OD. It won't smoke even in OD when a load is put on the engine? Have you let boost pressure drop to zero when in OD and then stomp on it? I know mine looks like a freight train at that point.

Head on or head off makes no difference when setting timing

forget about the timing i see when i have a engine down that far you might as well do some more thing thats just me just an opinion forget that the problem is the fuel. I know the truck when cold will throw a little cloud of white with a bunch of black behind it at cold start does not crank long or anything fires right up and warms up with a small haze of blue just untill it is warmed up:argh:
