Lift, Suspension, Tires

Hey, I'm looking to have a wider stance for my truck. I want the tires to stick out 2-3" from the side of my truck. What do I need to do in order to achieve this? How big of a lift can I get away with to maintain this? Thanks for the help!

turbo2332 01-23-2014 04:52 PM

i will sell you my 33x15.5x16's they are wide. LOL i had to level the fron trim the cab and weld knuckle stops to run this wide of a tire and not rub.

JBearSVT 01-23-2014 05:05 PM

That sounds like the tire he'd need to stick out that far too, unless he changes rims for a different backspacing/offset.

Did you have a lift with these tires you have? And I do want different rims than what I have now.

turbo2332 01-26-2014 08:37 PM

2" front leveling bushings and the above modifications.

Cummins_Power_13 01-26-2014 08:52 PM

So if I were to put a 4" lift, I probably wouldn't have to worry about rubbing?

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

My current tires are 285/75R16. What would be the best for a wider width?

Cjasso78 01-26-2014 11:54 PM

With a 4" lift you would have no problems rubbing 33's, but it would look funny. You would want to bump up to a 35" tire if you want to lift it 4". That is my 2 cents :tu:

turbo2332 01-27-2014 05:54 AM

yes your truck would look ridiculous with 33's and 4 inches of lift.

going wide has many draw backs

Cummins_Power_13 01-27-2014 11:07 AM

Yeah, I was actually looking at getting 35's with a 3-4" lift.

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

And will bigger tires fit my rims I have now? Or will have to get bigger rims as well?

turbo2332 01-27-2014 05:07 PM

what size wheel do you have? a 8-10'' wide wheel looks good with a 12.50

My tires are 285/17R16, I will have to check the rim size.

4x4manonbroke 01-28-2014 02:38 PM

A good 9" wide rim is nearly perfect for the 35x12.5 16's.. check with my chevy i was able to run 37's with a 4" lift.... :yeah:

I'm not sure where to check for my rim width.. Or is there an equation to find the width? Or should I just measure from one end to the other with a tape measure and use that as my width? Lol, idkk! But I'm pretty sure I don't have a 9" width rim.

turbo2332 01-29-2014 05:49 PM

measure through your wheel and subtract an inch. that will get you pretty damn close. inside bead to inside bead is where you measure.

Cummins_Power_13 01-29-2014 05:55 PM

Pretty sure I have 16x8 Rims.

turbo2332 01-29-2014 06:13 PM

12.5's will work fine on them, my 15.5's are on 16x10 rims and are as flat as can be no crown at all.

Cummins_Power_13 01-29-2014 06:26 PM

Should I just go with 33's ?! That'll still give me a wider stance right ?!

turbo2332 01-29-2014 06:51 PM

its whatever you want man.

not my truck just a google search. 2001 dodge ram ex cab

i cant get a good picture of my truck to load but i have a couple ehhh... pics on this profile to compare to.

ide go 12.5o if i had to do it again. the wide tires suck on the road.

Cummins_Power_13 01-29-2014 08:53 PM

Yeah, I really like that stance.. I can use that tire on my 8" width rims ?! Will I need a lift ?!

turbo2332 01-29-2014 08:55 PM

just a front leveling kit.

The picture you shared is exactly what i'm looking for. That looked go and just wide enough. Except I wanna beefier tire, more off road type.

12valvin2013 01-29-2014 10:56 PM

Nitto makes good tires. and Mickey Thompson baja mtz are nice but i paid a pretty penny for mine. good beefy tires are going to be expensive. (I know its late to throw this out there but) If you want a good wide stance your best bet is to get some offset wheels. a -4 or -6 would be plenty wide. My truck has wheels with a 0 offset and they are wider than stock. they arent quite as wide as the truck that turbo2332 showed you. I would get some 12.50 tires and if you dont think its wide enough get different wheels with a negative offset that fit those tires and are the same size. I.E. if you get a 33/12.50/16 tire make sure the new wheels would be 16s :tu:

To achieve offset wheels, do I just need different rims, or is it something specific with the wheels. Or is the offset gonna be within the wheel size? And I'll look at the 33/12.50/16s and see how they look.

JBearSVT 01-30-2014 04:37 PM

Offset is is an additional measurement to wheel size, generally specified in millimeters. The 0 offset wheel 12valvin2013 mentioned has the mounting surface exactly in the center of the width of the wheel. The -4 wheel is offset outboard, which is to say, the mounting surface is 4mm closer to the inside (engine side) than the outside of the rim, essentially taking the same width wheel and stepping it out for a wider track. A positive offset obviously would be the opposite; say... a +4 wheel, would be sunk deeper into the wheelwell than a 0 or -4. What you're looking for is probably a 16x8 wheel with a -4 or -6 offset. Or, you can get longer wheel studs and 4 or 6mm wheel spacers and accomplish the same thing, but it's generally frowned upon... they can have a tendency to loosen up.

Okay, I understand the offset now. I'm gonna want a negative offset.. Probably a -4 to achieve what I want. Which a negative offset would probably be the easiest way, rather than getting longer studs and spacers.

JBearSVT 01-30-2014 05:42 PM

Easier, and much more expensive. Spacers is the cheap route. Cheap... and higher maintenance.

Cummins_Power_13 01-30-2014 05:45 PM

It's more expensive to have offset rims? But it sounds more worth it in the long run.

JBearSVT 01-30-2014 05:59 PM

It's more expensive to buy four new rims than four little spacers and a handful of studs.

Do you know any websites that I can find some rims that are offset? Can you post a link if so?

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

For Example, in the link below, would these rims fit my truck? As far as bolt pattern goes.
