HELP!!!!
 

so a friend that "did his own truck" and "knew what he was doing" helped me mod my pump and advance timing on my 98 12 valve auto. now it runs like hammered dog shit. He assured me we didn't need a dial indicator to advance timing. Everything i read about advancing timing seems like we did it right aside from knowing how far we advanced it. on the pump we made a 0 plate, ground both washers on diaphragm flat, ground some off of the barrel and beveled edge of the afc. Right now it blows a decent amount of smoke pre-spool and has tons of lag, then a little gray smoke, once spool starts there is no smoke, but only builds about 17 pounds of boost and i was making close to 27 before mods. please help me.

pin time the engine and see where the pump timing tap is. should be visable and pointing towards the bottom of the plug hole.

i just got it to TDC and took the plug out of the hole on the side. it is really hard to see in there any advise?

retime with a dial indicator sounds like you went a little to far

It's a little late for my advice, but... I find that when it comes to pump mods, I like to do them one at a time. Drive it a little in between. Get used to it, then move on to the next thing. That way, when you do something and it runs like crap after, you have a pretty good idea what you screwed up.

take the timing tab out of the engine and rotate the engine slowly around while you or a friend looks in the hole in the pump for the tab. if you have to rotate the engine to see the tab your buddy went considerably to far.

I got all the timing back right. Thanks for all the help, but I still too much smoke pre boost and can only build about 20 or 21 pounds and my egt is up to about 675. I'm going to play with the smoke screw and star wheel tomorrow. Again thanks to everyone who chimed in!!
