97 cummins 5 spd, 4x4, cracked t-case replacement
 
T-case cracked in an accident. Just wondering if I should take this opportunity to replace it with newer dodge ram NV-271.

Or just replace with original NV-241-DLD. Both sides of case cracked at top and bottom. Anyone done this upgrade before? What about the drive-shafts? Will they fit or is the 271 different. Originally need the same case out of a manual 4x4 truck but all the local ones have been pulled. Need to be shipped 400m + away

The 271's will bolt right up to the trans if you want to go that route, there is no vac system for you 4x4 so you could do what many have done and rig up a posi lock cable if your set on the 271. If its an early 12v your speedo will need to be updated will not drive off the 271 output shaft like it does on the 241 DLD. The front driveshaft will not need to be changed but the slip yoke on the rear will need to be changed and the rear shaft will need to be shortened. You will also have to get fancy with your 4x4 shift lever as the shift pattern is reversed from what you have now. Make sure the 271 has the right input shaft for your trans auto is 23 spline a stick uses the 29 spline input shaft.

If you are looking for a drop in up grade your best bet is the 241 DHD the only change needed is the rear slip yoke, and you will have to get fancy with your 4x4 shift lever as well. Also need to make sure you get the right input for this option as well.

I would stick with the 241, unless your gonna 4x4 the beans out of it ... and then all bets are off lol

Just going to be highway miles mostly, driving in harsh mud a little (work not play) and snowy highways.

All local trucks have been scavenged for full manual swaps. I have a guy who did a manual swap on his truck from a 98 he bought and he has his t-case from 96 auto 4x4 cummins. Can I swap my internals over into his casing? Or are the whole aluminum casings different? It only will cost me $100 for his. He says when he took them both out they looked to be the same size but there was different spots where the speed sensor and stuff goes (I'd go take a look but he lives 2 hrs from me)

Last option before I order one a few hundred clicks away. :scare2:

you can swap inputs to make it work, the problem is the output shaft on the 241 DLD, 241 DHD, and 271's are different sizes

There are bound to be case differences also, like you said with the speed sensor and such.

It is a 241 dld aswell. Would they work swapping my internals or they won't cause of the output shaft?

you can swap the inputs pretty easy between the two, as far as I know the cases for both 241s are the same just different internals. You should be able to sawp everything over into the new case, but you will need to double check all your bearings and syncros line up in the right spot to make sure.

Alright so some mix ups. Its a 241 DHD out of a 96 auto. Has the same ratio as my t-case. I got it for real cheap (full case incl internals). Should be able to swap some of my pieces over and make it work. I'll report back.
