Default Fuel plate adjustments on my 95 4x4 5 speed

Hi guys. im new to the diesel worl just bought my 95 about a week ago. It did not have the fuel plate in it when i got it (previous owner removed) truck smoked like a freaight train. i liked it but it was so much i had to do something about it. i put the fuel plate back in (stock plate) and pushed it as close to the firewall as it would go. i also moved the afc as closde to the firewall as it could go. the truck lost a significant amount of power. it was like i was pulling 15,000 pounds behind it. so i moved the fuel plate all the way toward the radiator as well as the afc. can someone tell me exactly what kind of adjustments ive been making and what all its doing to the truck. now i have the (happy medium) i was looking for. smoke when i want it. just enough power and relatively no smoke when i dont want it. The fuel plate has been ouyt for 3 years according to previous owner so idk what all could have happened in that time. i just want to learn a little more about my truck so i know what im doing. thanks guys.

Basically your fuel plate is a fuel stop. it limits how much fuel the pump puts out. a100 plate like mine makes roughly 110hp over stock no plate is even more. The stock plate n afc full forward is I think a 45hp increase roughly. Learning to tune the afc is a big part of your power, smoke control(less smoke yhe better) and mileage control. im supposed to be making around 300hp n I get the same or better mileage then stock. but no it hasn't hurt anything aside from well destroying a stock clutch but who likes them things . not me

yup.... fuel plate determines how much fuel ... the star wheel determines when you get the fuel and the smoke screw .... well its explains its self ....

I'd have kept the plate out and tuned the smoke out with the smoke screw, myself. But no, unless there are more mods to the pump (rack plug, ground the AFC foot, etc) than you've said, running it plateless hasn't hurt anything. You'd know if it had, it's called a runaway pump. Not cool.

It is not the starwheel. The smoke screw is actually around back, and it's considerably more of a pita to get to. There's a topic here somewhere with a great cutaway, I'll have to look for it.
