Delivery Valve Questions

Hey guys,
was wanting some information on DV's. What do the numbers mean (181, 191, etc) and whats the best ones/ biggest ones to get? I've asked a couple of diesel performance shops before and they don't even seem to know the answer to my questions. I like to upgrade stuff to the point that i really won't need to upgrade the upgrade at any point in time (the only exception being my turbo due to budget and driveability). At this point i have a 215 P-pump with stock DV's, no plate, AFC full forward, 4k rpm GSK, Bosch marine 370 injectors, AFE cold air intake feeding a Schwitzer S300G turbo making 52 lbs, 4" downpipe & exhaust going through 6" stacks, and a Haisley Street/Drag dual disc button clutch powering an NV4500 via a 1 3/8" billet input shaft, with all the upgrades possible in the tranny, Dana 60 front/Dana 80 rear with 4.10's, rolling on 39.5" Super Swamper Iroks. I recently swapped the factory 3.55's for the 4.10's and that really helped it out alot but I still want more power and the delivery valves are next on my list I just wanted to know what to use. After that I'm thinking Snow Performance water/meth kit and then some fire rings and studs before upgrading the turbo department again. I went with the Schwitzer S300 because of price and availability when my Holset factory reman'd HX35 took a dump after 30k miles of 50# of boost. I always let my engine warm up fully before making over 10-15# boost and always cool exhaust to 300 degrees before shutdown.

Thought it would be good to describe my setup so good recomendations can be made on the DV's. I basically want to get the biggest ones i can without going custom. That can be done later i just don't want to get mid range off-the-shelf stuff. The truck was dyno'd at 428hp and 1,081 lb/ft. at rear wheels on this set-up...

A buddy has some brand new Scheid Laser Cut 181's he wants 250 for a set of 6 of 'em. Is that what i need or is there something better out there?

Thanks for any help!!
Eric

Delivery valves?

You should already have 181's in the truck (that would be stock with a five speed)
I went to City Diesel and got their delivery valves. If you keep on doing 50 + lbs of boost you will blow the head gasket. From what I know 50 is asking for trouble. Your next thing should be the head gasket and fire rings. Before anything else

hey bud ive been holding 55psi on a stock headgaskat with 260,000 miles for quite some time, also my budie has been holding 62psi on his stock hedgasgat for atleast a year with over 200,000. its not exaxty hg failer its the head lifting off the block thats why you should hed aftermarket headstuds

xzaq103 04-08-2008 02:46 PM

While some people are lucky. Most people say don’t push it past 50psi. Iwould say 191s i hear LCs push too much fuel for daily driving.

BigBlue12V 04-08-2008 10:28 PM

Ummm yea i know alot of people say no more than 45 psi... I was talking to Mark Chapple, owner of TST (located here in my town) today and he said his 95 (i think) 12V they have been running 55 or 60 psi through it and he's owned it since new, and its had no problems with stock head gasket. I do realize it maybe playing russian roulette, but i've been running it this way for over a year now (25k miles or so) and no problems. I don't run the piss out of it all the time, nor do i hold it to the floor for any time at all when i do, because it will either skyrocket the EGT or turn more RPM than i care for it to... And I don't get too great of fuel mileage anyway (13-14 mpg) so if LC's are heavy on fuel, big deal... I mean don't get me wrong for my setup i'm content with that fuel mileage but i know a lot of diesel owners would be disappointed with that.

So basically Laser Cut 191's is probably what i would want? Any idea how much power (roughly) i could expect to gain from that? and where's a good place to get 'em? I prefer dealing with Scheid Diesel as i've been pleased with them before, as well as TST (they only sell the 181's though) but Scheid's website only lists one DV and they don't even say what size they are or anything, no details at all. I wish they would rebuild their website, but thats another issue lol...

Thanks
Eric

After 191s there are 022s and 024s then custom laser cuts. I know DDP has their own 024s that are supposed to be real nice.

i ended up with the 191's and love them boosted my fuel milage almost 4mpg

are the fully cut ones the 191's

BigBlue12V 04-12-2008 06:27 PM

Thanks for the pic and info. I spoke with JP at Scheid's and he said for $200 they will full cut my 181's i have now. He said there's no use in just doing half cut because everyone ends up going full cut anyway and i totally agree with that! no sense doing it twice!!!!

So when i scrape up the cash thats whats going to happen. Then we may upgrade injectors too lol....

The 191s will be between the 181's and the 022's.

Ok well the valves he had wound up being full cut 181's, upon further inspection so yesterday I got my timing advanced to around 22-24 degrees, that made a huge difference, then put the DV's in, HOLY COW HANG ON!!!! bout crapped my pants!!! i think my sock strainer in the tank is plugged up though or something, gotta drop tank and pull that thing offa there, my P7100 is running out of fuel now!!

OH AND THE HOODSTACK BLOWS A FLAME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! at round 3k rpm and 8-900 degrees EGT.... Its wild!!!

I love these DV's!!!

Dr. Evil 04-20-2008 01:03 PM

22 -24 degrees??

What are you using for a head gasket?

BigBlue12V 04-20-2008 10:47 PM

stock gasket and studs at this point. thats next on the list :( along with 60# valve springs... and, possibly a FASS / Airdog type system.... unless 99% of my problem i'm having right now is just a clogged sock screen in the tank... we'll find out tomorrow night after i yank it out... see, at the same time as the timing was done yesterday, i had 1/4 tank of pump diesel and filled up the rest of the way on SVO, which i got from a guy who has made his own homemade SVO for 2 or 3 years now and ran it in his 12v's successfully. He said it will clean my tank and the crap will probably clog my filters. His dad was the previous owner of my truck, and owns a repair shop here they do a lot of work on Cummins engines there. They know their stuff pretty well for a general auto repair shop. Anyway, They had ran SVO in my truck before (when it was stock) and basically had no problems but did notice a small issue running it less than 1/4-1/2 tank it ran low on pressure. He thought the strainer in the tank could be partially clogged possibly. We'll find out tomorrow after work. Will post my findings.

BigBlue12V 04-22-2008 01:39 AM

Thats pushing your luck lol... its probably going to be a video of the flame and your gonna hafta wait cuz i'm gettin ready to leave for work and as soon as i get home from work i'm gonna yank the bed off and dig into the fuel tank to pull the sock strainer on the sending unit/draw straw cuz i think its plugged up and causing my problems right now. So, check back in in a couple of days. Thanks!
Eric

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

Ok so spent all night workin on the truck its 2:30 am i just got showered up and ready to go to bed... Took bed off, pulled sending unit, the strainer is a bit filthy. Took it off, put everything back together after cleaning the sending unit up. Changed the canister filter & cleaned the strainer bowl on the lift pump, fired it up, almost worse still than it was!!! I'm starting to get a bit upset at this point, start double checking there are no fuel leaks, and no air in the lines anywhere. Everything checks out good, got no probable cause for the problem. Can't be timing. Can't be the DV's. Can't be the veggy oil. Or can it? So with no other ideas left, i pumped as much as i could out of the tank (after running 90 miles on veggy oil) Then went to town and got diesel in cans, came back and put 10 gallons in it (the rest of my cans were full of SVO at this point LOL) and dumped in a healthy dose of Diesel Kleene + Cetane Boost. Fired 'er up and it idled alot better, let er warm up and took it for a spin, got 'er fueled and lit the turbo, she runs sweet! So apparently my truck isn't a vegetarian, but the good news is she's good to go and if i can scrape up the extra money, I'll put her on the dyno at TS and hope to spin close to 500 RWHP!!!!

plvaulter06 04-23-2008 02:23 AM

4mpg?!

BigBlue12V 04-24-2008 08:52 PM

Nah.... more like 13-15 in town depending on my driving... 16-17 highway driving moderate (15-16 rough driving, 17-18 going EASY on it, which is still like normal driving for most vehicles haha) We may just get a video this weekend of the beloved flame stack!
