Timing slip solution?

Hey guys I got my compounds done, water meth hooked up, everything running. Drove the truck and slipped the timing. Tore it apart, reset it, drove it, slipped again... So I got to talking to a local parts store owner who used to be involved with pulling tractors. He told me to try putting a little valve lapping compound on the shaft n torquing it down. He said it'll never slip again. Anybody ever try this? I need some opinions please.

I've not tried that, but every one I do I will take and spray brake clean on the mating surface real good and let dry before putting gear back on. If pump is off the truck I have also used real real fine sand paper on the shaft and then installed and put break clean on it

Sounds plausible. Its gritty and would cleat onto the shaft. Counter intuitive, yes. But I would clean it before the valve lap compound Always lean toward experience against tech writers(shop books and engineers)

Had the same problem with mine after getting my pump built, i ended up going with a keyed inj pump gear from kpp, no worries on slipping now.

Who is kpp and what is there website?

how many ftlbs are you putting the nut to? the lapping compound is taking the glaze off the shaft and pump gear. if its slipped several times it may be time for a new gear. i see very little advantage in a keyed gear as you now have to have the pump machined and the adjustable gear itself is what could possible now slip. i doubt you have a 14mm pump making 1800hp. even a good sand paper can be used on both the gear and pump to rough up the surfaces.

Wow, way to give out bad info.... the pumps already have a keyway cut into the cam. so all you do is put the keyway on the pump shaft and slide the gear on, don't know where you came up with this machine work that has to be done. Sure, you have to mod the timing cover, but that's not hard. yes, the bolts could possibly slip, but as long as they are tight and you use a little lock tight, they wont, my pump is set a 550cc, no problems with slipping, stock gear couldn't even handle 400cc without slipping.

I put red loctite on mine and had to heat it to break it free.

turbo2332 07-29-2013 12:21 PM

my bad you are absolutly correct with the key way.

senotext 07-29-2013 12:30 PM

its cool, some guys have luck with other methods, but after i got my pump built i tried everything to keep it from slipping and ultimately had to go with the adjustable gear, the timing is way easier and quicker to adjust as well
