FUEL ISSUE, HELP!!

I have a 96 cummins. its 5 speed. has 4k gov springs, 60# valve springs. timing at 16.5, 0 plate, boost elbo, EGT and boost gauges, and some more small things. stock turbo and injectors.

I am having a problem with my boost. I should be getting 30psi pretty easy. I am getting about 15psi easy then it takes a bit to get to about 23psi. I cant get anymore then that. i checked tonight and no boost leaks but was not sure how much psi i had in. My guess now is i have a fuel problem. I am not sure where to begin. ful lines? fuel pump? anyone?

Also just tonight driving home my oil pressure gauge was acting up. idle it was normal but the needle was shaking a little. driving once i was at 1700 - 2200 in acceleration I lost oil pressure? I pulled over and revved it up to 2200 and I did not loose pressure? unsure any help on anything would be great!

97cummins 04-22-2013 02:40 AM

The only time i usually get 30 psi boost is when i really get into it.
what are you doing to get yours at 30 psi?
What kind of psi are you pulling right now?
As for the oil pressue your sensor may be going out.
But thats a rough guess.

first-gen-tough 04-22-2013 04:24 PM

with timing, fuel plate and boost elbo I should get 30 if i get into it pretty good. my buddy with the same exact setup gets 30 quick. I get 15 quick then it builds to 23 sloooooooow. Ya i was thinking the sensor also

turbo2332 04-22-2013 05:57 PM

have you checked the condition of the turbo?

first-gen-tough 04-22-2013 07:02 PM

Ya turbo seems good. it spools fast till 15psi. no play in the bearing. seems solid. I think it might be a boost leak at higher boost or im not getting fuel fuel because even with a 0 plate im not getting fuel. I am stumped :argh:

94 12valve 04-22-2013 08:58 PM

you put the boost elbow on the line going to just the turbo and not to the afc right?

first-gen-tough 04-22-2013 09:58 PM

Ya. Timings at 16.5. did a lot to it. my buddy has the exact same set up but his goes so much better, i am not sure. not getting full fuel to push the AFC all the way? fuellines?

turbo2332 04-22-2013 11:34 PM

fuel pressure? any smoke?

how did it run before you did this work? im assuming you did this all at once?

a big boost leak you would hear, like definitely hear. even little ones can normally be heard over the engine once they start pushin.

first-gen-tough 04-23-2013 05:49 AM

good fuel pressure at idle. around 30. havent tested it driving yet. You would think with a 0 plate it would smoke stupid and get real hot but matted i dont get over 900 and very little smoke. my buddy had a boost leak that you could hear. I cant hear anything. If i have a fuel problem I would think it would skip and pop but it doesnt

turbo2332 04-23-2013 07:44 AM

not necessarily. they will more often than not spudder around on low fuel when in neutral but kinda tend to go unnoticed while driving if you dont have a gauge. just a hey this isnt quite what it used to be feeling. could have a faulty OFV could be a weak lift pump giving out up top. with what your truck has done it WONT blacken the sun but it should run pretty good. get a guage and see where you are at

94 12valve 04-23-2013 11:09 AM

make sure you hooked to signal line to the afc back up

first-gen-tough 04-23-2013 10:04 PM

Lines are all hooked up. something isnt right. has these for new parts. just bought the truck a month ago. previous owner did this... fuel shut off solenoid - intake heater solenoids
new batteries
s&b cold air intake
fuel sending unit and gauge in fuel tank - fuel lines
brake lines - ,rear brake shoes and all the hardware
front brake pads, front rubber brake hose
frame completely cleaned and painted
inside of cab floors bedlinered then rug put back down
bottom of cab bedlinered and painted
flywheel resurfaced,upgraded clutch,pressure plate and t/o bearing
transmission filled with amsoil, transfer upgraded to a DHD model.

Ive done steering pump, 6 plate then shaved my stock down to a 0 to see if i got any more fuel, boost elbo, timing 16.5, 4k gov springs, valve springs, KDP, front maine seal, valve adjustment, valve cover gaskets. gauges (EGT and boost). cant understand the problem. My waste gate leaks so i pinched it off. it seems like im not getting fuel all the way. doesnt even run hot. wont go over 900

:argh::argh::argh:

turbo2332 04-24-2013 07:14 AM

is your fuel shut off binding? this could be your problem. if the linkage isnt spot on the solenoid cant pull the lever all the way up limiting fuel. and for the sake of everyone on here when you get this problem figured out please hook your waste-gate back up.

did this happen immediately after you installed the new fuel plate?

or it could have something to do with your govoner springs. these can be a trick to get to work just right. mine are way way tighter than the directions tell you to get them. how many RPM's can you free rev to and how many under a load. these are also directly related to fueling

first-gen-tough 04-24-2013 03:40 PM

I did gauges and #6 plate in one night. tried it only got 15psi and wouldnt go over 800 for EGT. Then I payed a guy who does this work and has on my buddies truck and his truck and knows what he is doing to do the rest. he told me to check for boost leaks (checked can't find one) and do new fuel lines which I am doing tonight. He pinched the wastegate.

In nutral I can rev right to 4000 im sure, never have tried but went to 300o. driving i can go to 3000 and been to 3500 driving. It goes but just depending what gear your in to get the RPM's up there you know what i mean?

kapnhook 04-24-2013 07:35 PM

could this truck have a start retard pump on it? if it does putting a cut fuel plate in it can cause issues

Never heard of one? what is it

94 12valve 04-25-2013 02:17 PM

I'm pretty sure he is talking about the retard notches found on the 215 pump ... the notch does not effect fueling it retards timing as rack travel increases.

first-gen-tough 04-25-2013 03:00 PM

The truck was an auto and converted to manual 5 speed so it has the 180 pump

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

An other thread talked about the fuel rack I believe and to adjust the OFV. ould this be my issue?

turbo2332 04-25-2013 04:48 PM

we need fuel pressure readings man or we cant help you.

first-gen-tough 04-25-2013 05:36 PM

I do not have the equipment I need to do that. The guy I brought it to checked it and at idle it was 28 - 30. he never checked it driving. I wish he would have. in a week i will bring it down to him again and we will re check it driving

94 12valve 04-25-2013 06:11 PM

did you mod your afc? you didn't happen to slide the housing foward did you?

first-gen-tough 04-25-2013 09:52 PM

to get tp the fuel plate you have to take the AFC housing off correct? Where te star wheel is. Putting it back on i held it forward and tightend i down there

94 12valve 04-25-2013 11:13 PM

yes thats right ... by forward are you talking about twords the cab or away from it? you should have slid it away form the cab

first-gen-tough 04-26-2013 07:03 PM

Ya forward i am talking about away from the cab towards the front of the truck. I will have to check fuel pressure this week. if I am loosing it when getting into the throttle could it be my fuel pump?
