Oil Pressure Issue.
 

Hey Y'all,:hellox: I have a 1998 2500 heavy duty. Its the D vin with Manual and 4x4, Quad cab, Long Bed. At unpredictable and unexplainable times My stock OP gauge shows no pressure and I get a check gauges light comes on the dash. I can gun the accelerator or just let it idle and in will jump right back up to around 40. I have gone through a bunch of stuff with this 2.5 month old purchase with 336K on the mile counter. I doubt its the pump I mean they are Melling gearotor and good for 800kmi. There is an ambiguous reference in my dealer service manual to a oil cooler element and oil pressure regulator. I have drilled through a bunch of posts but I just cant take it. is there any other resource with more detail or has anyone actually seen it. it says to blow compressed air through it but not where. I am wondering where this cooler is and the regulator too. my injector pump overflow valve was weak and I suspect that maybe this regulator is too or the cooler element is clogged up. please have mercy on a newb.:ouch:

Why not start with a Manual Oil PSI gauge and test it and see if your loosing pressure or not?

There is raised square head plug to the pass. side of the line that oils the air charger. Is this port the correct place to manually check the oil pressure.

Mine does the exact same thing. The gauge was just plain dead for about a hundred thousand miles, then it started doing that. Like, all the damn time, out of nowhere. I found the plug for the sensor was messed up, and bought a new pigtail. That helped a lot, but it still does it sometimes. I got a new sensor but haven't been motivated enough to change it yet, usually I can't hear the bell over my stereo so it doesn't bother me often. It's been doing this for oh... at least fifty thousand miles now. I know the pressure is good.

Mine was acting a little funny then I broke the sending unit taking out my vacuum pump to reseal it and I bought a new sending unit from Genos and she has been working great since.

:humm:When you use the port for the mechanical oil pressure gauge do you need a snubber like you do for fuel pressure? and many thanks fer alla replies.:c:

I have never ran one for oil pressure gauge. The hose and fittings that usually come with the mechanical gauges are usually small enough i think like 1/8" tubing and restricts the flow enough that there is not a spike in pressure.

It was the Oil Pressure Switch. Replaced it yesterday and the Check Gauges light only comes on at start for a second or so until you have pressure. I learned in the process that the "sensor" or "sender" for the Oil Pressure is a switch and that the pressure is calculation ginned in the PCM in correlation to engine speed magnet counter. Its not a true pressure reading in any way. Hunh, :humm: Go figger.

Thanks for the comments. I used a Duralast part from AutoZone. I tried to go to Cummins cause it was $20 cheaper but they only had an improved type that had to be wired into a different pin in the PCM. :nope: And, Cummins cant even tie their shoes without a ESN. My ESN is MIA. As far as Dodge goes I want a car part not hedge the stock market.
