Default Advice on a 6BT swap

I'm planning on swapping a 6BT and G56 into my Ford in the near future. Current plans are to buy a 96-98.5 Ram complete, remove/rebuilt the motor and part out the truck. I'd like to buy the truck complete because there are some things I'll be needing off the truck besides just the motor (i.e. alternator, a/c, inter-cooler). If I manage to get the truck for around ~5k what could I reasonably get back out of it with the part out? Are there specific trucks I should look for to increase part out value?

I've researched some but I'm hoping someone could give me a general synopsis of what I should be looking for. Or someone to tell me to just buy the damn motor and not worry about parting out :P

If you have a buddy that can get you into the insurance auto auctions then you could buy a wrecked one for probably cheaper than a craigslist one and then pull the motor and trans and scrap the rest. The two sites that I know of are iaai.com and copart.com
I think you have to be a dealer to actually bid, but I'm not really sure. Just throwin out another option for ya
Good luck!

Hey Jeff,

That is something I have considered and I can bid through a proxy service. The problem is I won't know what I'm getting. Thats another reason I'm considering buying the whole truck vs. just a motor. If the truck is running I'll have a decent idea on the shape of the motor. I don't mind rebuilding the top end but I don't want to start from the bottom up on an unknown motor

I've considered getting a salvage truck (Bad body but good motor) from those sites as well. Maybe if I can get in on an auction close enough to check it out myself...

Yeah that makes sense. When I did my swap, I bought the truck from copart and the motor from my neighbor, so I got a good deal on it. We rebuilt the whole motor and inspected it though. The salvage truck would probably be a good idea though.

You might wanna check out salvagetruckauction.com. Watch out for the 98-98.5 12 valve as it might have the 53 block that is known for cracking on the passenger side. I heard its not bad on the 12 valve but pretty bad cracking on the 24 valve. I wouldn't even risk buying a 53 block.

Thanks for the heads up on the block. Looks like salvage trucks has some trucks that copart.com doesn't.
