47RH band adjustment (not the usual)

So I did some searching and found a wealth of information on band adjustment for the 47RH, but when I went to set up the front band, I noticed 2 things.

1. I do not have a T-40 Torx adjustment screw, it is a 5/16" square head screw.

2. After backing the jamb nut off 5-6 turns, and attempting to tighten the adjustment screw down to 72 in/lb, it only tightened up when the jamb nut bottomed out again.

I have a feeling this adjustment has never been done on this truck, with that being the case, would it be a good idea to back off the jamb nut as much as possible so I can be sure the adjustment screw is torquing to 72 in/lb on the band and not against the case when the jamb nut bottoms out?

Forgive the rather simple inquiry, I've heard of others dropping bands by fooling around with the adjustment screw and would like to avoid being in that camp for the time being! :c:

Yes get the jamb nut out of the way, take it right off if need be. On my 01 it has the torx and I had to take the nut right off to hit 72 inch lbs. It was almost inside the tranny, but once backed off the proper amount there was lots of room for the nut. As long as the threaded rod doesn't come out just the nut you won't hurt a thing.

You'll be needing a rebuild soon. Sounds like the band about gone.

That's my thought as well, it seems to shift fine when it does, just not as firm or as quick as I like, but I'm used to LSx based trucks and cars with shift kits and gas motors.

I actually started looking for a 47RH to rebuild in my spare time, that way I can have a nice shiny new one ready to go when this one gives up the ghost. I still have around 1" or more left on the adjustment screw though, so it might work for a bit longer.

I took the jam nut off and torqued the adjustment screw to 72in/lb. which was about 5-6 turns from where it was, backed off ~2 turns, so it was only 4 turns out of adjustment. I ended up with about 1/4" of thread left above the nut, so the band seems to have enough material left.

It still doesn't seem to apply very firmly though, probably clutch packs going out, or is there something in the trans that may not be holding pressure correctly?

I'm going to do a fluid and filter change here soon, so I figured I'd ask if there is anything else I should investigate while I'm digging into it.

Well I checked the fluid again after adjusting the band, and I guess it was playing tricks on me. It appeared to be full, but the fluid looked a little light. I guess it was splash back from the pan?

Anyway, I decided I'd rather it be overfull than too low, I put in some lubegard and ATF + 4 to bring it up to full, now it shows nice dark pink fluid and shifts great in all gears.

I havent had a lot of time recently so i just brought my truck into an aamco to get a band adjustment (rev doesnt do sh*t if ive got to go over a pebble). and not only was i told that there are no band adjustments for the transmission, but was yelled at hysterically about my idle being set to high and thats why my transmission slams into gears(not why i came in) and that the reverse works perfectly. needless to say i will be making some time for the tranny.
