I am looking at a 1998 12 valve and here is the ad:
Bd torque converter, flex plate and valve body on newly rebuilt tranny.ARB front bumper with mile marker hydraulic winch, bosch injectors, 4" exhaust, summer and winter tires, full size matching spare, fuel filter relocation kit from Genoes garage, amsoil bypass system, synthetic fluid in Everything, leather interior, fiberglass topper,trailer brakes, power mirrors, power drivers seat. Very reliable ol truck and the 12 valve is legened to go forever. My family is growing and im selling my favorite truck ever to get a four door. 230,000 miles. 8,300 obo.

It is a short bed club cab (2 doors extended cab)

After looking at it I found a few problems:
heater blower motor is bad
the whole bottom of the engine and front end are caked with oil and fresh oil residue
4hi is a little difficult to get in to but still works
very little rust basically a little cosmetic issue
another thing the rear main seal looks like its leaking but he said the tranny was rebuilt about 3000 miles ago

Any suggestions?

$8300 seems hi. I bought my 2001 5 speed 4x4 last year with 97,000 miles (163,000km) on it for $9500. Bone stock never modified. Mint. I know it's a 24 valve. Don't hate, I have 2 12 valves as well

It does seem high. Offer him less if you like it. The rear main seal is on the engine side,not the tranny. Is it leaking ATF, diesel oil or can you even tell? Rear mains leak down and out the bell housing. All the trucks develop leaks. It could have a lot of blowby too. Did you check that? The leaks won't be too bad save for the rear main and a blower motor isn't either. I'd check the blowby to make sure the engine isn't about to need work then go for it.

As far as prices go, I bet everything in Alaska costs more than it does everywhere else. Do you have any idea how much difference to expect in an average used truck?

IOW, if you say all used trucks cost $2k more in AK than the lower 48, and if we think your truck is $2K high, well, that's just the AK price bump and it's a good deal. YaknowhatImean?

ya vehicles tend to be a little more up here, and we only have one 12 valve for sale every 4 months or so.

How do i check blow by?

Take the cap off of the oil fill and set it on top. If the blowby pushes it off or hovers it in the air; walk away. You can also pull the dipstick tube and see what is coming out there. If you see an oily mist; it is not a good thing. Some blowby is normal. After my truck runs hard for a while and I'm waiting for it to cool I can see some. But it is a very fine mist. You can't really tell unless you look close. When it is cold; it just looks like air.

thank you i did notice there was a little white smoke coming out the oil fill tube (it was about 25 degrees at the time), but don't know how much is to much. I'll try those tests.

Was the truck run for a while or was it cold? I never really checked in cold weather,but I would imagine it would be white just like your breath when it is cold.
