EGT Problems

hi there i have a 1998 dodge 2500 p pump and i have a 100 fuel plate and the starwheel turned 8 clicks and a mbrp 4inch straight with a k and n drop in filter and my egts are 900 when just driving down the road i would like some info on how to cool it back down with leaving the fuel alone and i do not want a meth. kit please help:argh::argh:

diesel pap 12-20-2012 12:54 PM

coalroller66 12-20-2012 04:09 PM

1AMatt 12-21-2012 01:13 PM

Wow 900* is pretty high for normal driving. Whats it like with your foot into it?

diesel pap 12-21-2012 08:31 PM

seems high to me driving on level ground at road speed

coalroller66 12-23-2012 02:12 PM

foot in it its will climb to 1300 easy

CR9712v 12-23-2012 02:28 PM

somethings wrong there :humm:

turbo2332 12-23-2012 04:16 PM

what was it prior to messing with the AFC? same gauge? brand of probe? there is no way in hell you are actually getting that hot. pulling a fully loaded 24ft enclosed i can see #'s like that only if i try never ever unloaded. can we have a little more background on the truck

captain_stabbin 12-23-2012 10:07 PM

i agree^^^ sounds like a bad gauge/probe!

12v15004x4 12-25-2012 01:28 AM

Auto or manual? Psi max and psi cruising while egts at 900?

JBearSVT 12-25-2012 01:16 PM

Yeah, I'd be interesting in the boost level vs. EGT temps myself.

monstercat 12-26-2012 05:23 PM

what should your EGT's be Just running down the freeway at 65 MPH not pulling any load

turbo2332 12-26-2012 05:50 PM

6-700

JBearSVT 12-26-2012 06:18 PM

Depends on the hills for me. @70mph I'm usually doing around 400° downhill and uphill 8-900°. 600° sounds about right on the flats though.

Ironworker94Dodge 12-27-2012 11:16 PM

well then my EGTs are off the charts. i just had my pyro installed (pre boost) and with my foot to the floor im runnin at 1400... compared to my idle at around 400. I drive a 94 2500 cummins with the AFC kit #8 plate (slid 50% forward) KanN cold air intake and 4 inch MBRP straight pipes. i messed with my starwheel and honestly have no idea where it is and where it should be. :argh:

there is nothing wrong with these readings

JBearSVT 12-28-2012 07:03 AM

Yeah, more fuel = more heat. With those mods, 1400° at WOT doesn't seem unusual. Or overly concerning, as long as you don't keep it there for miles on end. The most I can get out of mine is 1000°, but the only change to my fuel system has been cranking the starwheel FF. It barely even smokes, so the fuel difference is minimal and I'm sure the open exhaust doesn't hurt me either. Once you start screwing around with fuel plates though, it's a whole other ball game on the pyro.

I actually buried the pyro needle today foot all the way in uphill. but i also installed my boost gauge today and am wondering about it.... with pyro at 1200 i was seeing 15-17 psi ... is that good or bad?

turbo2332 12-30-2012 07:38 PM

bought average. put a boost elbow on it and run it at 35psi and see what your pyro reads.

Ironworker94Dodge 12-30-2012 07:40 PM

isnt the boost elbow only for manual trannys?

turbo2332 12-30-2012 08:05 PM

absolutly not, spent $15 and get you one.

JBearSVT 12-30-2012 08:41 PM

I actually noticed that my EGT is higher at WOT and low boost than high most of the time. I assume it has something to do with the relationship between high boost and high rpm, and the fact that these trucks are starving for fuel from the factory. So when I'm pulling a trailer up the highway at 10psi and 1500rpm trying to push my foot through the floorboard, it's got more fuel than air vs. screaming at 30psi and 2500rpm when the governor springs are pinching things off and there's way more boost than fuel to feed it. But WTF do I know? Not too much.

Ironworker94Dodge 12-30-2012 09:50 PM

where does the boost elbow go ... into the boost port ?

JBearSVT 12-31-2012 09:39 AM

On the bottom/front of your turbo you should see a vacuum line attached to the housing with an elbow fitting. You take that fitting out and replace it with one that has an adjustment screw on it... baddabing.

daveO 12-31-2012 02:15 PM

Some of the older 12 valves have the boost reference line to the wastegate on the back of the AFC.

JBearSVT 12-31-2012 08:24 PM

Thought those were only first gens? Hm. Learn something every day.

Ironworker94Dodge 12-31-2012 08:42 PM

yeah thats where mine is. is tightening the screw supposed to add boost?
