Blown turbo??? How did this happen???

So I put in a new #5 fuel plate in my 97 12v and started hearing a rough grinding sound but just thought it was the trany starting to go but then I'm driving and the sound gets louder until boom no more boost. Anyone know what happened??? I got the plate forms dynamite diesel and it came with an extra spring and a boost elbow. I put the boost elbow on the turbo but now I think that was the mistake cuz the hole in the new elbow is way smaller than the original one. So if anyone has an old turbo laying around that i could get for cheap. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

how many miles were on the turbo. a turbo is a wear item, they go bad with age.

1993firstgennewbie 11-29-2012 10:48 AM

they just wear out like anything else my h1c went out after 275k and was puting out 35psi

LeeVining12v 11-29-2012 12:20 PM

It had about 250k on it but it was only pushing about 22 psi. You don't think it was the boost elbow??

turbo2332 11-29-2012 01:33 PM

absolutely not. a 1/4 million miles on a part that sees extreme temp changes all its life is pretty good in my book.

So how can I tell for sure the turbo I blown?

olsmokey 11-29-2012 04:02 PM

pull it off the truck and looked it over. check shaft play it may have wore out and seized up because a bad bearing. might be able to just remove the air inlet house from the air breather and see if its seized.

Sounds like time for an upgrade :tu:

H.R.D 11-29-2012 04:50 PM

Don't forget you can rebuild them fairly easy and inexpensive too. :c:

LeeVining12v 11-29-2012 05:30 PM

Any suggestions on upgrades??

H.R.D 11-29-2012 05:34 PM

Depends on what you are looking for in HP numbers. S300 series is a great upgrade

LeeVining12v 11-29-2012 07:35 PM

I'm only lookin for a small upgrade that won't take too much modifications. And kinda inexpensive.

19cummins95 12-19-2012 06:04 PM

go with an hx40, i had one for 200k miles and i loved it but i blew up yesterday, old age with no wastegate, i upgraded to a custom hx40w should be here on the 24th. they light fast and its a good cheap step up from a 35. you can pick them up for 300ish just make sure its a holset and not chinese crap.

just make sure you dont build up 30+ psi and dump the throttle, it really bangs the shaft around and i think that might be why mine is in pieces....

LeeVining12v 12-20-2012 07:22 PM

I think I'm going to go with this crazy ceramic ball bearing turbo from comp turbo.

19cummins95 12-20-2012 07:51 PM

What size and how much did they charge you for it? Keep us posted

angelic0- 12-20-2012 08:31 PM

if you rebuild it be sure to get a HX40 compressor wheel and compressor housing ;)

lodal cummins 12-20-2012 09:11 PM

Hey 19 cummins95 who did you go through getting that new hx40?? Who is the manufacturer? Thanks!!!!!

19cummins95 12-20-2012 10:37 PM

its from a speed shop in Indiana I got it off eBay but it said "1 item available" and the ad is no longer up. Its basically a holset core with a bunch of upgrades, 8 fin compressor wheel, I think stock 40s have 6 or 7 fins. Adjustable wastegate set for 30 and ceramic bearings. Its advertised as a quick spooling drag turbo and the add mentions using it for twins, its not here yet so I dont know more what the add and pics said about it, but I think it'll be a good little charger.. So as far as manufacturer I couldn't tell you, it looks like some sort of custom piece. I'll let you know more when it shows up.

Oh and I THINK its an external wastegate not sure on that though..

so what does it mean t3/t4 turbo .... and what comes stock on my 95 12v ... its a 215 hp isb.... stock turbo is a little bit loose ... looking now while it still runs... but I dont have any issues rebuilding stuff if some one can point me to where to get parts for this unit... thanks.... :tu:

19cummins95 12-25-2012 10:04 PM

T3and 4 are the different size flanges on the turbo mounting to the manifold, 95 12v should be a t3. Rebuild kits for hx35s which is your stock turbo are cheap, like 75 - 100 but a new hx40 which is a good step up is about 300. You're smart to replace the turbo BEFORE it lets go... I'm still in the middle of my install. I was lucky to have no metal chips in my oil. Good luck :tu:

a t3/4 is a hybrid turbocharger. there are a gasillion sizes you can make. it consists of a t3 hotside and a t4 cold side.

these are both hybrid t3/4 one with a 63ar turbine and a 50trim comp and one with a .48 ar and a 60 trim compressor
